How to fix sound problems on your TV

If you're having problems with the sound on your TV, there are a few things you can check. This guide will help.

If you hear a static sound

This is a really common problem. You'll hear a low static humming coming from speakers. It's usually caused by electrical interference, and can affect all types of speakers.

The only way to fix it is to remove the source of interference. In some cases this might not be possible if the TV, speakers aren't properly shielded. If you're using external speakers, keep them away from other electrical things, and try to keep the cables connecting the speakers away from other electrical cables and kit.

If the sound is distorted

Sometimes the sound from your speakers can be distorted or broken up. This is usually because of a bad connection, or a problem with the signal getting to your TV.

There could be a few causes, so there are a few different fixes to try:

  • Make sure your speakers are connected properly, and any connectors are fully inserted.
  • Check cables for any breaks, making sure there are no frayed or damaged wires.
  • If the speakers have their own volume control, make sure it is not set too high or too low.
  • Check the TV aerial or satellite cable to make sure it's connected properly.
  • If you have an adjustable indoor aerial, try moving it around to check for the best reception.

If the settings are wrong

If the audio settings aren't right on the kit that's connected to your TV, it could cause problems with the sound.

Go into your TV audio settings and check:

  • The balance control should be set as close to the centre as possible.
  • Check that the bass and treble aren't set too high, or too low - it can cause distortion issues.
  • Try resetting to default.

If there's a hardware fault

Some problems will be down to a hardware fault, and there are a few things you can check to find the issue:

  • If you're using external speakers, unplug them and check to see if you're having the same problem with the TV's internal speakers.
  • Try plugging the speakers into something else to see if the problem is still there.
  • Try using different cables.

Hopefully that sorted out the problem, but if you need any extra help, you can get in touch with a Team Knowhow Expert here.
