Getting the right aspect ratio

squiggleboldXL

Lots of modern TVs are widescreen, but older programmes and films that aren't widescreen might not show properly, looking slightly stretched. The different settings for this are called 'aspect ratios' and this guide will help you with setting the right one.

Choosing the aspect ratio

In the settings menu for your TV, there'll usually be a section called 'Picture' or 'Display' and that's where you'll find the aspect ratio settings. These are the most common settings.

  • 4:3 aspect ratio: this is the older, square style.
  • 16:9 aspect ratio: this is for widescreen programmes.
  • 2.35:1 aspect ratio: also known as 'Cinema' mode. This is used for most film releases.

Your TV might have more options than this, and you can use your remote to choose between them. Find the setting that works best for you and your TV.
