Before you get started with your Apple TV, it's a good idea to familiarise yourself with the remote control. Here's what all the buttons do.

  • Touch surface - this works like a laptop touchpad letting you navigate around the menus, to choose something, just press the touchpad. You can also use this to skip forwards or backwards when videos are playing, just click the right or left side of the touchpad. Swiping down during video playback opens additional settings like subtitles and video chapters.
  • Menu - press once to go back a screen, or hold to go to the Home screen
  • TV/Home - double press to see your recently used apps, also opens the TV app (if it's supported in your region - find out more here)
  • Siri - press to issue voice commands to Siri
  • Play/Pause - plays and pauses video and music, also lets you fast forward or rewind by pressing Play/Pause, then swiping left or right on the touchpad.
  • Volume up/down - turns the volume of your TV up or down.
