This guide shows you how to get things from your computer to play on the PS3. Setting it up for the first time can be a bit confusing, but once you've done it, it's nice and easy to use. The steps to get connected are below.
The first thing you'll want to check is the settings on your PS3. You need to have the 'Media Server Connection' turned on for the PS3, otherwise it won't work. Here's how to do it:
On the PS3, open Settings.
Go to Network Settings.
Choose Media Server Connection.
Set it to Enabled.
Something else that can stop things connecting is the sharing settings on the computer. This is how to set them to get everything working:
On the computer, open the Network and sharing centre.
On the left, choose Change advanced settings.
For the profile that you're signed in with, make sure that the 'Network discovery' is turned On.
Next, make sure that 'File and printer sharing' is On as well.
That's the network settings done, so now you need to make sure 'Media Streaming' is on as well. Here's how:
On the same page, scroll and click Choose media streaming options.
Click Turn on media streaming.
Click Save changes at the bottom.
Now, your computer and PS3 will be able to connect to each other and share things. Just go back to the PS3 and go to the 'Audio', 'Video' or 'Music' section. Choose your computer as the 'Media source', and you'll be able to see all of the available media that's on your computer, right there on the PS3. This should work fine for anything that's being played through Windows Media Player, but if you've got other file types, you might want to try a different way.
A simple and easy solution is to download some software called 'PS3 Media Server'. It really does do what it says on the tin. On your computer, open a web browser and search for 'PS3 Media Server'. Download and install by following the instructions, and that's all the set-up you need to do.
When it's installed, just go on the PS3 and choose the PS3 Media Server from the PlayStation's menu. In there, you'll see all the available media that's on your computer. To go to your Documents, go to 'C:\Users' and click on your username, and then My Documents. There you'll see all your videos, pictures and music.
The way it's set up, you'll see all the available folders. If you want to choose certain folders instead, here's how:
Open the PS3 Media Server on your PC.
Choose the Navigation/Share Settings tab at the top.
At the bottom, click <All Drives> then the big red X above it.
Once it's gone, click the Green plus to choose the files you want to see.
Those are the simplest ways to get your videos, music and other files to stream to your PS3.
