An Amazon Echo is a great way to get started building your smart home, you can use it to control loads of other devices around the house. We'll show you how to get your Echo Dot up and running with this super-helpful guide.
Here’s what you should find in the box:
Connect the micro-USB lead to the mains adapter and plug it into a wall socket. Push the other end of the cable into the connector on the side of the Echo Dot. A blue light will show on the Dot. After a few moments, the light will turn orange and you’ll be greeted by Alexa.
Open the Alexa app. Sign in with your Amazon account details, or Create a new Amazon account.
If you’re new to Amazon, fill in your details and check their ‘Terms and conditions’, then tap Create your Amazon account.
Check the ‘Privacy’ notices to see how spoken words can be used, then tap Continue.
Choose Echo Dot to move on.
Choose the language you’d like to use on your Echo, and tap Continue.
Tap Connect to Wi-Fi.
Check that your Dot is showing an orange light ring. Tap Continue.
You need to connect your device to the Dot to set it up. Open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings.
Tap the “Amazon-xxx” network to connect to your Echo Dot. When you’re connected, go back to the Alexa app.
The app also shows you’re connected. Tap Continue.
It’s time to connect your Echo to the internet. Tap your Wi-Fi network.
Type your wireless password and tap Connect.
When it connects, tap Continue.
If you want to use an external speaker with your Dot, choose how you’re connecting it and follow the instructions. To skip, pick No speakers.
If you’re setting the Echo up for yourself, tap your name. If not, touch I’m someone else.
Change the Alexa owner’s name if you need to, then tap Continue.
You can make calls to family and friends with Alexa. Allow it to upload your phone’s contacts to Amazon, or leave it for Later.
If you want to use Alexa for calls, you’ll need to tell it your number. Type it in and tap Continue, or Skip to leave it for later.
That’s the Setup Wizard finished. Swipe through the examples to see what you can do with Alexa, or tap Menu (3 bars) to explore the app.
