In this guide, we'll go through the Setup of your phone with you, making sure everything is covered for you to start using your Vodafone Smart First 7.
When you open the box, here's what you'll find:
The first thing you'll need to do with your phone is to get the SIM card in. Your Smart First 7 uses a MicroSIM, and you can increase its storage by adding a MicroSD card. You need to put both into the back of the phone, so you'll have to take the back cover off first.
On the back of the phone, on the bottom-right edge is a notch in the casing. Use your thumbnail in this to prise the back cover away from the phone.
Slide the MicroSIM into the housing in the bottom left of the phone, with the metal contacts facing down, and the cut-off corner going in first.
If you're using a MicroSD card, slide it into the right-hand slot, again with the metal contacts facing down.
Put the battery in, using the metal contacts to line it up.
Put the back cover on, and then press around the edges to secure it in place.
With everything in, press and hold the power button on the on the left-hand edge of the phone for a few seconds until it starts to turn on.
When you turn on your phone for the first time, it will show the 'Setup Wizard', which is a series of steps that'll guide you through getting the phone ready to use.
On the welcome screen, choose the language you want to use, and tap the yellow arrow.
Tap the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect to, or tap Skip to set up the phone without Wi-Fi.
If you're connecting, type the password for the network, and press Connect. The password can normally be found on your router.
If you have a Google account, which you'll need if you want to do things like downloading new apps, type it in and press Next. To create an account, tap Or create new account. To set up the phone without one, tap Skip.
If you're signing in, type your password and press Next.
You might be asked to add some payment info to your account, which'll let you buy things from the Play Store. To add some, choose a payment type, then press Next to set it up. Tap No, thanks to skip adding any.
You'll be asked if you want to add a screen lock to your phone - we'll cover it in more detail later in the guide, so tap Next.
Tap Skip anyway.
Read through the Google services, which cover things like backing up your phone or using its location for things like maps.
Keep the boxes ticked for the ones you want to use, then tap Next.
To use the 'Simple Home screen', which is aimed at new smartphone users, tap the switch.
To turn on 'Help Tips' which will pop-up to show you how to do things on the phone, tap the switch.
Tap Next to close the Setup.
You've finished the Setup Wizard, and will be looking at the Home screen. The bottom row of icons is for some of the most used apps on the phone: Phone, Messages, Chrome and Camera. In the middle is the Apps button, which will show you all the other apps on the phone.
At the bottom of the phone are the touchscreen buttons, which will help you to get around the phone.
'Back' (triangle): takes you back a screen, or closes an app.
'Home' (circle): takes you back to the Home screen.
'Recent apps' (square): shows apps you've had open, so you can swap between them.
Your phone will need an internet connection to do things like downloading apps, connecting to email, or going on websites. It can be connected using Wi-Fi or mobile data, and we'll go through these options in this part of the guide.
Tap the Apps button on the Home screen, then tap Settings.
Scroll down and tap Wi-Fi, and make sure it's turned on using the switch at the top.
Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.
Type in the password for it, and press Connect. The password can normally be found on a sticker on your router.
If it's worked, you'll see the word 'Connected' underneath the Wi-Fi, and your phone will show the Wi-Fi signal bars at the top of the screen.
Tap Apps, then tap Settings.
Tap on Data usage.
Check that the switch for 'Mobile data' is turned on.
If your phone has any problems connecting to mobile data, you might need to put in the 'APN settings' for your network. You can find the settings you'll need it, and how to set them up, in our APN settings guides.
Adding your email account to your phone will let you see your inbox, write new emails, and your phone will let you know whenever new ones come in.
Open Settings from the Home screen.
Scroll down, and tap Accounts.
Tap + Add account, and choose the type of account you want to add. For work or school accounts, tap Exchange, or for personal accounts, tap Personal.
If you're adding a personal account, tap your account provider (Hotmail, Yahoo etc.) or tap Other if yours isn't shown.
Type in your email address, and tap Next.
Type in your password, and press Next.
You might be given some account options, such as how often to check for new messages. Choose the options you want to use, and tap Next.
Type a name for the account, and type your name at the bottom.
Your account is added, and you can get to it by opening the Email app from the Home screen. If your phone can't download your email settings, you might need to type them in. You can find the ones you'll need in our guide to email server settings.
Setting up a screen lock on your Smart First 7 will help to keep your photos, messages and other data safe. In this chapter, we'll go through the different options you can have for the lock screen.
Scroll down and tap Security.
Tap on screen lock, and pick the type you want to use.
Draw or type your code, then tap Continue.
Confirm it, then tap OK.
Choose which notifications you'd like to see on the lock screen, and tap Done.
Your screen lock is set and you'll be asked for it whenever you want to unlock your phone.
