Kit Guide: Vodafone Smart First 6 - setting it up


We've written this guide to help you set up your Smart First 6 for the first time, from putting in the SIM and memory cards, to connecting to the internet and setting up email.

1. Box contents


You'll find the following items in the box:

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards


Follow the steps below to learn how to put in your SIM card, and microSD (memory card), if you have one.

Use your thumbnail in the notch on the right edge of the phone, and prise away the back cover. 


Put the SIM card in the right slot above the battery compartment. Make sure the metal contacts are facing down, and the cut off corner is pointing towards the battery.


If you have a memory card, put this in the left slot. Make sure the metal contacts are facing down, and the narrow end goes in first.

3. Completing the Smart First 6 Setup Wizard


When you turn on your phone, you'll see the 'Setup Wizard', which helps get your phone set up. Follow the steps below to get your phone set up and ready for use.

Choose your language by tapping the box and swiping up or down the list. Tap Start.


Make sure the Data service enabled box is ticked, which connects you to mobile internet. Tap Next.


You'll be asked to set up your Google account, which we recommend using. Without it you can't download apps or use Google services. Tap Set up now.


If you don't have a Google account, tap New and fill in the form. If you have one, tap Existing and type your Google email address, then tap Next.

Type your password, then tap Next. You'll need to accept the Terms of Service. Read through these, and tap OK.


You can choose what Google services you want to use. 'Backup & Restore' backs up your phone's apps and settings, and 'Communication' lets you manage how you receive information from the Play Store. Untick any of the options if you'd like to opt out. Tap the right arrow.


Your phone will detect the time from your network, but this might not work for all providers. Go to Automatic > Set date, and scroll through the settings, then tap Done.


Tap Set time, and scroll through the hours and minutes to set the time, then tap Done.

Choose whether you want a Standard or Simplified Home screen. We recommend using Standard, as you'll see all the functions and shortcuts you need.


You'll need to click through a few welcome pages. These include Vodafone apps, but you can untick these if you don't want to use them. Tick Next.


Tap OK, and you be taken to the Home screen.

Touchscreen buttons

The three buttons at the bottom are used for navigating the phone.

'Home' (circle): Pressing this returns to the Home screen from any screen or app.

'Back' (triangle): Takes you back one screen.

'Menu' (square): Opens menus when you're in apps or settings.

4. Connecting to the Internet


You can connect your Smart First 6 the internet using Wi-Fi or mobile data - here's how to do both.

Connecting the Smart First 6 to a Wi-Fi network

From the Home screen, go to Apps Settings Wi-Fi.


Check the switch at the top is on (showing blue). If it's off, tap it to turn it on.


Tap the name of your Wi-Fi network and enter your password, which is usually found on a sticker on your router.


You'll see 'Connected' below the network's name, and a fan-shaped Wi-Fi symbol at the top.

Turning mobile data on or off

Go to Apps Settings


Tap More, then Mobile Networks.


Turn mobile data on by tapping the switch.

5. Setting up new email accounts


Read through these steps to learn how to set up email on your phone.

Go to Apps > Settings Add account.


Tap your account type. If you tap an account with a red 'M', email will go to your Gmail app. If you tap an account with a yellow envelope, it'll go to the Email app.


Type your email address and tap Next.


Type the password and tap Next.


You'll be able to change some of the settings, including how often the app checks for new emails. When you're happy with the settings, tap Next.


Give your account a name if you like, then tap Next.


Type your name, which will appear on your emails. Tap Done.

6. Setting up a lock screen


We always recommend protecting your account with a lock screen, to keep your personal data safe.

Swipe down from the top of the screen to bring up Quick Settings.


Tap Settings.


Scroll down and tap Security.


Tap Screen lock.

Choose your unlock type:

  • 'Swipe' lets you unlock the phone with a swipe of the finger, but gives no security.
  • 'Pattern' lets you draw a pattern on a grid of dots.
  • 'PIN' is a numerical code.
  • 'Password' is a more complex code.

Enter your chosen code and tap Continue.


Confirm the code again, then tap OK.
