Using your Sony Xperia E5

This guide will help you get more familiar with your Xperia E5. We've covered the basics, from making a call, to setting an alarm.

Making phone calls

These short steps will have you making calls in a snap.

To get started, tap the Phone icon on the Home screen.

If you've never made any calls before, you won't have a call history screen, so you'll need to search your contacts to find a number. Search your contacts by tapping the Contacts icon at the top of the screen, next to the three dots.

To enter a phone number yourself, tap the blue keypad button at the bottom of the screen. You can use the number keypad to spell out the name of a contact as well.

Press the green phone when then number you're calling is on the screen.

Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)

This guide shows you how to send text and pictures messages from your new phone.

How to send an SMS text message

On your Home screen, find and tap Messaging (it looks like a white circle with a blue smiley face in it). If you've got any messages you haven't read, you'll see a red badge in the corner.

To write a new message, tap on the compose button (a white pen in a green circle) in the bottom-right corner.

Pick the person you want to send it to by tapping the Enter one or more recipients box.

Any names in your phone will appear as you type. Tap on the contact you're trying to text.

Tap the Write message box and type your message. To send it, tap the blue arrow to the right of the box.

Sending attachments & multimedia messages (MMS)

To add an attachment, tap one of the icons under the text box to choose what to attach. In an MMS message, you can take a new photo using the camera, or attach a picture that's already on your phone: just tap the dots icon.

You might be able to find the item you need in the panel that replaces the keyboard, but you can also tap the gallery icon (that's the file icon in the green circle at the bottom of the screen) to look through all your files and photos.

When you've found the item you'd like to attach to your message, tap it to choose it and it'll be showing in the body of the message.

Add more text if you want, and then press the green arrow to send it.

Deleting a message thread

A message 'thread' is the list of texts between you and someone else. To delete one of these conversations, open your inbox. Find the one you're deleting, and then press and hold on it. You'll see a tick next to it, and then you'll be able to tap the bin icon at the top to get rid of it.

Sending emails

If you've set up an email account on your phone, you're probably already getting emails. Here, we'll show you to send emails, and emails with attachments. Attachments can be pictures, photos, documents and video clips.

Sending an email

To send an email, you need to have an email account set-up on your Xperia. If you haven't done that, you can take a look at our Setup Guide, then come back to this one.

To see your emails, tap the Apps icon followed by the Email icon.

When you can see your email inbox, tap the compose button (it's a green circle with a white pen in it).

Tap the To line. Start to type the name of the person you'd like to send an email to, and any matching names or email addresses will come up. Tap their name to add them. If you want to send the email to other people as well, tap the down arrow.

To enter a title for your email, tap the Subject line and add one.

Now you're ready to type your message by tapping into the window in the middle of the screen. You can send it now by tapping the white arrow at the top.

Adding an attachment

To add an attachment, tap the paper clip at the top. When the menu opens, you can choose what you'd like to attach.

Go through your files to find the ones you want, then tap to choose them.

When you're sending images, you might be asked if you want to resize them. Files that are too big can be slow to send. If you make your file size nice and small, you won't have any problems.

When you're done, tap the arrow to send your email on its way.

Setting alarms

On the Xperia E5 the alarm is in the Clock app, on the Home screen. If you've taken the clock off the Home screen, you can get to it by tapping Apps > Alarm & clock. Open the app and follow the steps in our super-helpful guide.

The buttons across the top of the app let you choose between Alarms, World Clock, Stopwatch and Timer functions. Tap the alarm clock.

To set a new alarm, tap the blue circle with the + sign in the bottom right-hand corner.

Set the time you'd like the alarm to sound. You'll see a clock face for you to choose the hour by tapping or dragging the arm to the right place.

Once you've chosen the hour, choose the minute for the alarm time in the same way, and when you're happy with your choices, tap OK. If you make a mistake or want to change the alarm time, you tap Cancel.

Tapping Repeat means you can set an alarm to sound on more than one day.

You can change the sound, volume, vibration and snooze lengths for each alarm.

Tap Save to store and set the alarm.
