Kit Guide: Sony Xperia E4 - setting it up

To use a phone for the first time, you'll need to set it up. This super-helpful guide will take you through everything from putting the SIM card in, to setting up your email accounts.

Box contents

This is the stuff you'll get in your box:

  • Sony Xperia E4
  • Mains power adapter
  • USB media cable
  • Screen protector
  • Information pack

Inserting your SIM & memory cards

Putting the SIM card in is your first job. The back cover wraps around the sides of the phone, so starting with the corners, push it away from the back of the phone and you should be able to take it off.

Looking at the back of the phone, there's a slot labelled 'SIM' on the right-hand side. It slides in with the cut-off corner first, and the gold contacts facing away from you.

Xperia E4 Assembly

If you've got a memory card to put in as well, there's another slot further down labelled 'microSD'. Only one end will fit in the slot, but the gold contacts need to face away from you.

Completing the Xperia E4 Setup Wizard

To set the phone up, you'll need to do some steps called the 'Setup Wizard'. Don't worry, we've explained all the steps below.

Setting it up

Turn the phone on by pressing and holding the power button. You can let it go when you feel the phone vibrate.

E4 Setup 1

First, choose your Language. 'English (United Kingdom)' should be chosen already, but you can pick a different one if you want. When you've chosen, press Done.

Read the 'Important information' by tapping the link, and then press the right arrow at the bottom.

Choose how you want to connect to the internet. We recommend choosing Mobile network and Wi-Fi, unless you don't have a data plan. Press the right arrow when you've picked.

The time and date should be set automatically. If it's wrong, press Change and you can set it manually. Press the right arrow when you're done.

E4 Setup 2

We recommend connecting to Wi-Fi on this step, so that the phone can download everything it needs to. Press Search for networks.

Tap the name of your network from the list.

Type in your wireless password. If you're not sure what it is, it'll be on a sticker on your router. Press Connect.

When it's worked, it'll say 'Connected' under your network name.

E4 Setup 3

When you get taken back to the 'Wi-Fi connection' screen, press the right arrow.

Here you can sign into Google. If you've got an account already, press Yes. If you haven't, press No and you can set one up (you'll need it for downloading apps).

Type in your Google email address and password, and then press the right arrow.

You can read more about the 'Terms and Conditions' by pressing the links, and then press OK when you're happy.

E4 Setup 4

'Google services' are some things that run in the background. Read through them and tap the ticks to get rid of any you don't want. Press the down arrow for more.

Read through the rest of the services, and then press the right arrow when you're happy.

You'll be asked for payment information because some apps aren't free. Tap an option to set it up, or press Skip and you'll be asked to pay each time instead.

If you want to use Sony's services, press Get started, or just press the right arrow if you're not interested.

E4 Setup 5

You'll get some options about your online accounts. Leave the switch 'On' if you want to use it, and then press the right arrow.

The steps should all be done now. Tap Finish.

There's a 'Data disclaimer' to read. When you're ready, press Next.

Read the rest of the disclaimer, and then press Done, and you'll be taken to your Home screen.

Touchscreen buttons

There's some buttons under the main screen that help you get around the phone.

'Home' (house): gets you back to the Home screen from any app.

'Back' (left arrow): tap it to go back one screen.

'Recent apps' (rectangle): shows a list of the apps that have been used recently.

Connecting to the Internet

Lots of our apps and games need an internet connection to work properly. These steps will help you stay connected.

Connecting the Xperia E4 to a Wi-Fi network

E4 Internet 1

Press Apps (the grid of dots above the Home button), and then press Settings.

Press Wi-Fi, and make sure the switch is 'On'. Tap the name of your network when it appears.

Type in your wireless password. If you're not sure what it is, it'll be on a sticker on your router. Press Connect.

When it's done, it'll say 'Connected' under your network name.

Turning mobile data on or off

E4 Setup 2

Open the Settings and then press More.

In the list, press Mobile networks.

The first option is 'Data enabled'. Tap the box to add or remove the tick. It's on when the box is ticked, and off when it's empty.

If you're having any problems getting your phone to connect to mobile internet, you might need to put some manual settings in. We've got them here.

Setting up new email accounts

Your Xperia E4 can handle all your different email accounts - here's how to set them up.

E4 Email 1

Open Settings, and then press Add account.

Choose the type of account. Usually it'll be 'Email', but work or education accounts will be 'Exchange'.

Type in the email address and password for the account you're adding.

Choose the notification options you want, and then press Next.

The account will set up automatically and you'll go back to the 'Accounts' page. If you're having any problems with it, we've got a guide to email server settings that'll help.

That's your Xperia E4 set up and ready for you to use. If you need some more help from a Team Knowhow expert, get in touch here.
