How to delete your Google account from your Samsung Galaxy

There are plenty of reasons why you might need to remove your Google account from your Samsung Galaxy phone – the question is, how do you do it?

Your Google account is responsible for a lot of the features and functions of your Samsung Galaxy. Whether it's a top-of-the-line Galaxy phone or a large-screened Galaxy Tab, your Google account will sync and back up most of your personal data, save your pictures safely to the Cloud – and perhaps most importantly, allow you to download apps from the Play Store.

If any of this synchronisation stops working, then removing the Google account and re-adding it is one of the quickest and most effective troubleshooting steps you can try.

But that's not the only reason you might want to remove your Google account from your Galaxy phone. On newer devices – those running Android 5.0 or later – it also activates something called 'Android Device Protection'.

This is essentially a 'kill switch', created in order to reduce phone theft. If you intend to factory-reset your Galaxy, you must enter the email address and password associated with your Google account in order for you to use the phone again once the reset has been completed.

It's important to remove the account from your phone before you sell or trade it in, as the phone will be unusable with the Android Device Protection lock enabled. If you're not sure what the email address and password for your Google account are, you should remove the account before attempting to factory-reset.

How to remove the Google Account

Start off by going into Apps, then find Settings.

Once in Settings, look for the Accounts section.

Tap on Google.

Tap on your Google account.

On older Samsung Galaxy phones, press the Remove account button in the bottom-right corner of the phone. On newer Galaxy devices, press the word More, or three dots in the top-right of the screen and press the Remove button.

Confirm by pressing Remove account.
