Kit Guide: Samsung Galaxy J5 - using it

If you've read our Set it up guide, your J5 is ready to use. Read on to find out how to make calls, send emails and texts, and set alarms.

1. Making phone calls

Follow these instructions to make a call on your J5.

 
 
 
 
1.

Tap the phone icon, from the Home screen.

 

2.

You'll see the dialler keypad, which is used to type the number you want to call. Tap the green phone to call.

 

3.

You can also use the keypad to type the name of a contact. Use the numbers that correspond to the correct letters to spell a name, and the J5 will find the contacts that match. Tap to choose them.

 

4.

You can also tap Contacts at the top, and look for a name.

 

5.

When you have a contact on screen, tap the phone icon to call them. You can mark a contact as a favourite by tapping the star next to their name.

 

These steps will show you how to send texts and MMS messages.

 

Sending texts

Tap the Messaging app from your Home screen. The icon is a white envelope with a yellow sheet. If you have unread messages, you'll see a red badge in the corner.

 

2.

Tap the compose button, which is a pen and paper.

 

3.

Tap in the Enter recipient box, and type a mobile number, or name of a contact. Tap to choose them. You can add more contacts like this.

 

4.

Tap in the Enter message box to type your message. When you've finished, tap Send.

 

Sending attachments & multimedia messages (MMS)

Follow the steps 1 - 3 above, then tap the paperclip.

 

2.

Options will appear and you can choose what you want to attach using the menu. You can also take a new photo, video, or voice recording. The message will be sent as a multimedia message and you might be charged for this - check with your mobile network about costs.

 

3.

Tap on the file you want to attach, then tap Done.

 

4.

Your attachment will display in the body of the message. You can add more text, then tap Send.

 

Deleting a message thread

 

1.

Open the Messaging app from the Home screen.

 

2.

Tap and hold on the name of the thread you want to delete.

 

3.

A tickbox will appear next to it. You can tap other threads if you also want to delete them, then tap the bin.

3. Sending emails

Read through these steps to learn how to send emails. You must already have your email account set up on the J5 before trying to send an email.

Sending an email

 
 
 
 
1.

Tap Apps, then Email.

 

2.

Tap in the To line. Start typing their name, and matching contacts will appear. Tap to add them to the recipient list. You can add more contacts this way.

 

3.

Tap in the Subject line to add one.

 

4.

Tap in the white portion underneath to type your message. Tap Send at the top when you've finished.

 

Adding an attachmnent

Follow the steps 1 - 3 above, then tap the paperclip.

 

2.

Look through the files on your phone using the menu, and tap the one(s) you want to attach. Tap Done.

 

3.

You might be asked to resize your images, which is helpful if you're using mobile data. Large images and videos can use a lot of data.

 

4.

Write your message, then tap Send.

 

4. Setting alarms

1.

Go to Apps, then tap Clock, or tap the time on your Home screen.

 

2.

Tap Add to set an alarm.

 

3.

Use the arrow to set the hour and minutes. Tap the top line to set the date.

 

 
 
 
 
4.

You can change the melody, volume, vibration and snooze duration for each alarm. You can also set it as a smart alarm, which gets louder the longer you leave it. Tap Save.

 

5.

The alarm will show in the menu, showing the date and time it'll go off.

 

6.

To turn an alarm off, tap the green alarm clock. Tap it again to turn it back on.
