Kit Guide: Samsung J3 - using it

This guide will help with some of the basics, like making phone calls and sending text messages. We've also included some tips to help you make the most out of your phone.

1. Making phone calls

Tap the Phone icon on the Home screen.

2.

Enter the number you want to call or type a name from your address book. You can also search through your contacts by tapping Contacts at the top of the screen.

3.

Tap the phone icon to start the call.

2. Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)

One of the best ways of staying in touch with people is text messages. Here's how to send texts, and also how to add attachments (like pictures).

Open the Messaging app from the Home screen - it looks like a white envelope. Then tap the compose button at the bottom of the screen.

2.

Choose who to send the message to by tapping the Enter recipient box.

3.

Enter a phone number or tap Contacts.

4.

Tap the Enter message box and write your message, and tap the orange Send button to send it.

Sending messages with attachments (MMS)

 

1.

Follow the steps above to number five - don’t send the message yet though.

2.

Tap the paperclip icon, and choose the type of attachment by tapping the icon.

 

3.

Find the file you want to add, tap it, then tap Done. If you're sending a picture or video, it’ll be sent as a multimedia message which might cost more than a normal text. Check your phone contract or ask your service provider for more information about this.

4.

Tap the paperclip icon, and choose the type of attachment by tapping the iconThe attachment will appear in the body of the message. Add more text if you want and press the orange icon to send the message.

Deleting a message thread

 

1.

Open the Messaging app.

2.

Touch and hold on the name of a contact.

3.

Tap the bin icon in the top right-hand corner of the screen to delete it.

3. Sending emails

If you need to send a bit more information than you can fit into a text message, or if you're sending lots of attachments, it's usually best to send an email. Here's how it's done on a Galaxy J3.

Open the Email app (it looks like an envelope). If it’s not on the Home screen, tap the Apps icon and open it from the apps list.

2.

Press the compose button (it’s a white pen and paper icon in the bottom-left).

3.

Tap the To line to choose who to send it to. Type the address, or the name of a contact and pick them when their details appear. You can add several recipients to an email to send it to them all. The ‘CC’ line is used to send people an email that isn’t addressed to them. 'BCC' is the same as a CC, but doesn’t show the main recipient.

4.

Enter a Subject for your email, then tap the white space in the middle of the screen and type your email. Tap the arrow to send your message.

Tap the paperclip in the title bar, then choose the type of file you’d like to attach.

3.

Find the file you want to attach, tap it, then press Done.

4.

If you're attaching an image, you might be asked if you want to resize it. This is handy if you're using mobile internet, as sending large images can use a lot of data. Tap the arrow icon to send your email.

4. Setting alarms

You can use the alarms feature on your phone to wake you up in the morning, here's how it's done.

From your Home screen, go to Apps > Clock.

2.

Make sure the 'Alarms' tab is selected, then tap Add to set an alarm.

3.

Use the arrows above and below the numbers to set the alarm time.

4.

Press Repeat to choose whether to automatically set the alarm on specific days.

Change the tone and snooze time if you want, then press Save in the top right-hand corner.

To turn an alarm off, tap the green alarm clock.

5. Tips

Here are a few handy tips to help you get the most from your phone.

 

Rearranging apps

When you download new apps, they’re automatically added to the end of the apps list. But, you can rearrange them if you want, and add them to your Home screen to make it easier to find the apps you want.

Tap the square Apps icon on your Home screen.

2.

Tap Edit in the top-right corner of the screen.

3.

Hold your finger on an app and drag it where you want. Drag it to the left or right-hand edge, to change page. Dragging the app to the top of the screen will move it to the Home screen.

4.

To uninstall an app, tap on the red minus sign (-) in the corner of the app icon.

Adding icons to the quick settings menu

 

You can add and remove options from the quick settings menu, which is displayed at the top of the page when you open the settings options.

1.

From the Home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen to open quick settings, then tap Settings.

2.

Press Edit in the top-right.

3.

Tick the boxes of any apps you want to add - untick the ones you want to remove. You can have a maximum of nine selected at once.

4.

Tap the arrow in the top-left to save and go back.

Adding new options to the quick access ribbon

 

Swiping down from the Home screen (and most other screens too) opens the quick access ribbon. You can choose what appears here to make it easier to get to the settings you use most.

From the Home screen, swipe down to open the notifications area.

2.

At the top, tap Edit.

3.

Icons in the shaded area at the top are shown in the quick access ribbon. Touch and drag the icons below to add them, or drag icons out to remove them.

4.

Tap Done to save your new options.
