Using a Samsung Galaxy A5

In this guide we'll take you through some of the core features of your Galaxy A5, like making calls and sending texts.

 

1. Making phone calls

To make calls on your Galaxy A5, you'll need to open the Phone app from the Home screen.

When the app opens, you'll see four tabs along the top:

  • Keypad: used to dial a number - press the green phone icon at the bottom to call it.
  • Logs: shows you any recently received, placed or missed calls. Tap a number or contact to call them back.
  • Favourites: can show a list of your favourite contacts so that you can call them quickly. To add someone to the list, tap the star icon on their contact card.
  • Contacts: shows all the numbers saved onto your phone - tap one to see their info, then tap their number to call it.

2. Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)

This section helps you to send text messages and also add attachments (like pictures, or videos).

Tap the Messaging app, then tap the new message button in the bottom-right (or tap a person's name to reply to them).

If you're writing a new message, tap the Enter recipient box, and start to type a person's number or name. Suggestions from your saved contacts will show as you type - tap one to choose them.

3.

Tap the Enter message box, and type your message.

4.

Tap the send button on the right of the message box to send your text.

Sending attachments & multimedia messages (MMS)

To send an attachment, follow steps 1-3 (above) to get your message ready, then these steps will help you add an attachment.

1.

Tap the paperclip on the left of the message box.

2.

Choose the type of item you want to attach - an image, video etc.

3.

Find the item on your phone, and tap it to choose it. Tap Done to add it.

4.

Tap the send button on the right to send your text with the attachment.

Deleting a message thread

A 'message thread' is all the texts send between you and a contact. 

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Press and hold the thread you want to delete, until a tick appears beside it.
  3. Press the bin icon in the top-right.

 

3. Sending emails

Open the Email app from the Home screen.

2.

Tap the new message button in the bottom-left corner.

3.

Tap the To box and start typing a person's email address or name. Suggestions might show from your contacts as your typing - tap one to choose them.

4.

Type in a subject for your email.

5.

Type your message into the box at the bottom.

6.

Tap the send button in the top-right corner to send the email.

Adding an attachment

To send an attachment, follow steps 1-5 (above) to get the message ready, then these steps will show you how to attach something.

Tap the paperclip at the top of the screen.

2.

Choose the type of file you want to send (image, video, etc).

3.

Go through your phone to find the item, and tap it to choose it.

4.

Tap Done to attach it.

5.

Tap the send button in the top-right to send the email, with the attachment.

4. Setting alarms

Alarms can be set and changed using the Clock app, here's how it's done.

From your Home screen, tap the Clock app, then tap Alarm in the top-left.

2.

Press the button in the top-right.

3.

Use the hour and minute sliders to choose the time you want the alarm to go off.

4.

Tap the days you want the alarm to sound, and tick the Repeat weekly box if you want the alarm to repeat each week.

Tap Alarm tone to change the sound the alarm makes.

6.

Use the Snooze switch to turn it on or off.

7.

Tap Name to change the alarm label to something like 'work' or 'school'.

8.

Tap Done in the top-right to save the alarm settings.

The alarm is set and will go off at the time you've chosen.

Rearranging apps
1.

From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.

2.

Tap the three dots in the top-right.

3.

Tap Hide apps if you want to hide some of these icons, or tap Uninstall/disable apps to get rid of some.

4.

Tick the boxes on the apps you want to hide or remove.

5.

Tap Done, and the apps you've chosen will be hidden, uninstalled, or disabled.
