Kit Guide: Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) - Setting it up

This guide helps you get your Galaxy A5 set up and ready to use. We'll show you everything you need to know to get started, from inserting the SIM, to setting up a screen lock.

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

Your Galaxy A5 takes a NanoSIM, and you can also increase the storage capacity by adding a MicroSD (memory) card. Here's how to do both.

 

Insert the SIM card

Push the pointed end of the SIM removal tool into the small hole next to the tray on the right-hand edge of the phone. The tray will pop out.

2.

Slot the SIM into the tray with the metal contacts facing down.

3.

Slide the tray back into the side of the phone.

The MicroSD card goes into the slot on the top of the phone. Use the SIM tool again to open the tray.

2.

Slot the card into the tray with the narrow end pointing towards the phone, and the metal contacts facing down.

3.

Slide the tray back into the top of the phone.

3. Completing the Samsung Setup Wizard

When you've inserted the SIM and memory cards, you'll need to get through the 'Setup Wizard'. There are quite a few steps, but don't worry, we'll walk you through them.

During the Setup you might see a message pop-up asking you to install mobile internet settings. Tap your network name and tap OK.

Turn the phone on by pressing and holding the power button until you feel it vibrate.

2.

Choose the language you want to use, then tap Start.

3.

Pick your Wi-Fi network. You'll see the option to skip this, but we wouldn't recommend it because your phone will need to download some updates, and it's best to connect to Wi-Fi for this.

4.

Type the password for the Wi-Fi network (it's usually printed on a sticker on your router). Tap Connect, then Next.

You'll need to agree to Samsung's 'End User Licence Agreement' and 'Privacy Policy'. You can also choose whether you want to send 'Diagnostic data' to help Samsung improve their services. Tap Next.

6.

You can transfer information from another Android phone if you want This uses NFC (Near Field Communication), so you'll only be able to do this if your old phone supports it. Tap Copy your Google accounts..., or skip by tapping No Thanks, then Next.

7.

You'll be asked to sign in with your Google account, which you'll need to be able to download apps and games. If you have a Google account, type your Gmail address and tap Next. If you don't have an account already, tap Create a new account.

Tap Accept to agree to the 'Terms of Service' and the 'Privacy Policy'.

Choose which 'Google services' you want to use and tap Next.

Add a payment method if you want (making it easier to buy apps and games), or tap Remind me later to leave this for now. Tap Next, then tap Continue.

12.

You'll be asked if you want to add an email address, we cover this in a later chapter so tap Not now, then Next.

13.

You can 'Protect your phone' by adding a lock screen if you want, but we suggest tapping No, thank you, as we cover this in a later chapter.

To restore a backup from an old device, tap the name of the device you want to back up from. Untick any apps you don't want to transfer, then tap Next.

15.

If you don't want to restore from an old backup, choose Don't restore.

16.

You'll be asked if you'd like to set up an optional Samsung account. To skip this, tap Skip.

You can 'Customise your device' by ticking the boxes to see things like weather updates. Then tap Finish and you'll be taken to the Home screen. 

Your phone's all set up and ready to go.

4. Connecting to the Internet

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi.

2.

Tap the name of your network and type the password, this can usually be found on a sticker on your router. Tick the Show password box to check your typing, then tap Connect.

If all goes well you'll see the word 'Connected' below the network name, and a Wi-fi symbol on the status bar at the top of the screen.

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Connections > Data Usage.

2.

Tap the Mobile data switch to turn it on.

5. Setting up new email accounts

To set up an email account, you’ll need to know which type of account you have. Work or education accounts are usually 'Exchange', most personal email accounts are 'IMAP' (some older providers might still use 'POP3').

From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Cloud and accounts > Accounts > Add account.

Type your email address and password, then tap Sign in.

6. Setting up a lock screen

We always recommend protecting your phone with a lock screen. Follow the steps below if you didn’t do it as part of the Setup.

From the Home screen, go to Apps > Settings Lock screen and security Screen lock type.

2.

Choose which type of lock you'd like to use:

  • Swipe is the default type which is quite insecure.
  • Pattern is a pattern drawn on a grid of dots.
  • PIN is a numerical code.
  • Password is a longer, more complex security code.
  • Fingerprints lets you register more than one fingerprint and use this to unlock your phone.

Enter your unlock code (if you're setting a pattern, you'll have to set a PIN as well to act as a backup). Tap Ok.

4.

Confirm the PIN or password by typing it again, and tap Continue.

5.

When the screen is locked, you'll see notifications when you receive emails and messages. Choose to turn them off completely by taping the On switch, Hide content, or Notification icons only.

6.

Tap Done.

Unlocking your phone with your fingerprint

 

When you've added one of the above types of screen lock, you'll be asked if you want to use fingerprints to unlock your phone. Tap Setup to add your fingerprints.

Hold your finger on the Home button until the phone's captured your fingerprint.

2.

When it's done, just press the Home button to exit the 'Lock screen' menu, and return to the Home screen
