Rebooting your Galaxy A3

squiggleboldMD

If your phone is frozen or unresponsive, it's worth trying to reboot it. Rebooting it (also known as a 'soft reset') won't affect any of your personal information, which is why we'd suggest it first.

1.

Press and hold the volume down button, and the power button.

2.

Keep both buttons held down for ten seconds.

3.

Your phone will look like it is turning off, then will attempt to turn itself back on.

If that doesn't work, or your phone is still unresponsive, follow the next part of this guide.

Back up your kit first

squiggleboldMD

Resetting your device will cause a complete wipe of the handset, meaning all your personal information will be erased.  You'll need to back up anything you want to retrieve later.

One way to save your data would be via cloud services, using your Google account. Android handsets will usually backup information automatically, but for more information on this, check this page from Samsung.

To back up your A3 to a PC, you'll need to download and install Samsung's Kies 3 software to your PC. Once Kies is installed, simply follow our guide here. Make sure you download version 3 of Kies, as this is the one required for newer phones. Once you're backed up, you're ready to reset.

If you are not experiencing any problems with your phone and you can easily access the settings menu, then doing a reset this way is by far the easiest method. This method is also useful if you're experiencing intermittent issues or crashes, as it can quickly and easily fix many faults with the phone's operating system. Follow these simple steps to perform a factory reset.

1.

Open the apps tray and tap Settings.

2.

Tap Backup and reset.

3.

At the bottom of this page, tap Factory data reset.

4.

Tap Reset device.

5.

Tap erase everything to begin the reset.

6.

You may need to wait a few minutes for this to complete, and for the phone to turn back on.

If you have locked yourself out of your phone, or can't get into the phone for any other reason, this method may be best for you.

1.

2.

Press and hold both the volume up and the Home buttons.

3.

While still holding the Home and volume up buttons, you need to also press and hold the power button.

4.

Keep all three buttons held down for ten seconds.

5.

Release all buttons when you see the Samsung logo, and the handset will go into its recovery menu (if your phone turns on as normal, you will need to try the above steps again).

6.

Once you have the recovery menu open, press the volume down button until you have highlighted wipe data/factory reset.

7.

Press the Power button to select it.

8.

Again, you will need to press the volume down button until you have highlighted yes - delete all user data.

9.

Press the Power button again to select it.

10.

Allow the kit to finish resetting.

11.

Once it is complete, you will see an option on the screen which is already highlighted, saying reboot system now. Press the Power button a final time to select this.

12.

The phone will now restart. It may take a couple of minutes to configure, and may sit on the Samsung screen for longer than normal.

Resetting your phone remotely

You may need to use this method if your phone has been lost or stolen. There are several things that you will need to make sure of, before this method will work.

Firstly, you will need to know the Google account details which are associated with the phone, as without this you won't be able to log into the Android device manager. Secondly, you will need to make sure that there is an active internet connection on the phone, whether that is mobile data or Wi-Fi. The reset will not complete unless the device is connected to the internet.

4.

Confirm that you want to complete this action by clicking Erase once again.

Resetting your phone using a computer

If your phone is not working properly, or you can't seem to access the settings for any reason, then using this method may be your only option. Using this method will wipe your data, but will also make sure you have the latest firmware installed.

Before you begin, you will need to make sure you have installed Samsung's Kies 3 software. You can download it from Samsung's website. When it has been installed, you can continue with the steps below.

samsung kies 1
1.

Open the Samsung Kies 3 software on your computer, and connect your PC to your phone with the USB cable.

2.

The Kies 3 software will recognise your phone. Once it does, you can click on it to select it.

3.

At the top of the screen, click Tools.

4.

Click Firmware upgrade and initialisation.

5.

At this stage, you may be prompted to Install USB driver. If this comes up, disconnect your device and click Install. If you don't see this message, skip to step 10.

6.

You may now get a prompt for User Account Control. If so, click Yes or Continue to complete.

7.

Wait while the USB driver installs.

8.

When this has completed, reconnect your phone to the computer.

9.

Click Tools at the top again, and then Firmware upgrade and initialisation.

10.

A message will pop up asking you to confirm that you want to install the new software. Click OK to continue.

11.

The software will download and install, and may take a few minutes to finish. When it's finished you will be able to set your phone up as normal.
