2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

Before you can get started with the Setup of your phone, you'll need to put the SIM card in. You can also use a memory card if you want to get some extra storage space in.

The first thing you will have to do in order to insert the micro-SIM and microSD (memory) cards, is remove the Lumia 635's back cover. Holding the phone upright and with the screen facing you, use the pad of your thumb to ease the back cover rearwards, away from the screen. When one corner has released, use your thumb on the other top corner in the same manner until that too slides away. You should now be able to lift the back cover away. Remove the battery if it has already been inserted to allow the cards to be installed.

The micro-SIM and microSD cards slide into slots in the edge of the battery well. There are indicators on the information strip to show which cards go where, and which way round. The microSD goes in the holder nearest the camera lens (below right), with the thin end going in first and the gold-coloured contacts facing down. The micro-SD card goes in the holder furthest away from the camera lens (below left), again with the gold-coloured contacts facing down, and with the cut-off corner end inserted first.

3. Completing the Nokia Lumia 635 Setup Wizard

When you turn on your phone for the first time, it'll show you the 'Setup Wizard', which will help you get the phone ready to use.

Setting it up

1.

Scroll through to choose the language you want to use on your Lumia (English is the default) and tap next.

2.

The next screen outlines what the set up process covers. Tap next to continue.

3.

Tap accept to agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Statement, which you can inspect by tapping the links on screen.

4.

You will be asked to connect to Wi-Fi. Find your Wi-Fi network name in the list and tap on it to start the connection process. You can also skip this step if you wish, but we would always recommend using Wi-Fi when possible, as the connection is usually faster and more stable, and it doesn't affect your data allowance.

5.

Enter the wireless password when prompted. This may also be referenced on your router as the WEP key, WPA key, wireless key or passphrase. This will be case sensitive so make sure you enter it correctly, checking it by tapping in the Show password box, and tap done when you are ready to proceed.

6.

If the connection was successful this will be shown onscreen, and a Wi-Fi symbol will appear in the top left corner of the screen, next to the signal bars. Tap next to proceed.

7.

You will be invited to activate Wi-Fi Sense, which allows your phone to connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible. It also enables you to share your Wi-Fi with others (and share their Wi-Fi too) as long as they are also running Windows Phone 8.1. Untick the boxes if you don't wish to do this, and tap next.

8.

Tap recommended to configure your phone with standardised settings for updates, app downloads etc. If you wish to customise these settings, tap custom and untick the items you wish to disable.

9.

The country and region options are preset to the correct UK settings, but if you are setting the phone up elsewhere then tap to change these. When you are ready to proceed, tap next.

10.

The next screen tells you about keeping your life in sync with a Microsoft account, and this is the most important account you can add to a Windows Phone. Your Lumia 635 needs one in order to operate correctly, back up your data, and to allow you to download apps from the Windows Store. If you have an email address with ending in hotmail.comlive.com or outlook.com, or their .co.uk counterparts, then you already have a Microsoft account, and you should tap sign in. If not, tap create oneto make a free Microsoft account by completing the on screen form.

11.

Enter your Microsoft account email address and password in the boxes provided, and tap next.

12.

If you have used the same Microsoft on a previous Windows Phone, you will be invited to restore it from a backup. If so, either tap the phone name you wish to restore from, or tap don't restore, and then tap next.

13.

You will be asked about backing up your phone to your Microsoft account. This is always a good idea as it can automatically upload your photos via Wi-Fi, as well as backing up settings and text messages. Tap yes to set this up, or not now to skip this.

14.

Only a few more screens to go, and the next one doesn't really do anything apart from telling you, like I just have, that you're almost finished. Tap next.

15.

If you wish to opt out of sending feedback information to Nokia, then untick the box. Tap next to finish the setup wizard.

4. Connecting to the Internet

squiggle

There are 2 ways you can connect to the internet, using Wi-Fi, or mobile data - we'll show you how to do both in this part of the guide.

Connecting the Lumia 635 to a Wi-Fi network

1.

From the home screen, swipe right-to-left to open up your apps.

2.

Scroll down and tap on Settings.

3.

Tap on WiFi.

4.

Make sure the switch is set to On. Find your chosen network in the list shown on screen, and tap on it to continue.

5.

Enter the password, bearing in mind it wil be case-sensitive. Depending on your router, it may also be called the wireless passkey or passphrase, WEP key, or WPA key. There is a tickbox to display the password you have entered, in order to check it's spelt correctly before attempting to connect. Tap Done to connect and move on.

6.

If all goes well you should see the words Connected to followed by your network name, and also a wi-fi symbol appearing on the top line of the display, next to the signal bars. If it isn't fully solid, that just means the signal isn't full strength, but should still work fine.

Turning mobile data on or off

2.

Tap on email+accounts > add an account.

From the list, find your account type and tap on it. In this example we're adding a Yahoo! account, but if your account type is not listed then tap other account. You may need additional account-specific information to complete that setup.

4.

Tap on the email address and password boxes in turn to enter the information requested. You can check the password by ticking the box before you tap sign in to continue.

If you’re having any problems adding your email account, our guide to email server settings will help out.

6. Setting up a lock screen
