Kit Guide: Motorola Moto G4 - using it

This guide will help you to use some of the core features of your Moto G4, like making calls, sending texts, and setting alarms.

Making phone calls

Making phone calls is done using the Phone app, which can be opened from the Home screen. Tap the Phone app to get started.

  • When the Phone app opens, it'll show the 'Speed dial' screen. This shows your favourite contacts, and lets you call them quickly.
  • Tap the History tab to see any recently placed, received, or missed calls.
  • Tap on the Contacts tab to see a list of all the numbers saved to your phone. Tap one to see their info, then tap their number to call them.
  • Tap the blue keypad button to see the dialler screen - dial a number and press the green phone button to call it. 

Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)

Your phone can send texts and attachments using the Messaging app.

Open the Messaging app from the Home screen, and tap the new message button in the bottom-right to write a new message, or tap a person's name to reply to them.

2.

If you're writing a new message, start typing a person's name or number in the box at the top. As you're typing you might see some suggestions - tap one to choose them.

3.

Type your text into the message box.

4.

Press the arrow on the right to send the message.

Sending attachments & multimedia messages (MMS)

Follow steps 1-4 above, and then follow these steps to add an attachment to your message.

1.

Tap the paperclip on the the left of your message.

2.

Choose the type of item you want to send - picture, video, etc.

3.

Tap the item you want to attach.

4.

Tap the arrow to send your text with an attachment. 

Deleting a message thread

A 'message thread' is all the messages sent between you and a contact. Follow these steps to delete one.

1.

Open the Messaging app.

2.

Press and hold on the thread you want to delete until a tick shows next to it.

3.

Press the bin icon at the top to delete the thread.

Before you can send emails, you'll need to have set up an email account on your phone.

From your Home screen, got to Gmail, and tap the new message button in the bottom-right corner.

2.

Tap the To box, and start typing a person's name or email address. Suggestions might show as you're typing - tap one to choose them.

3.

Type a subject for your email, and write your message at the bottom.

4.

Tap the arrow in the top-right to send the email.

Tap the paperclip icon, then tap Attach file.

2.

Go through your phone's files and tap the item you want to attach.

3.

Tap the arrow in the top-right corner to send the email with the attachment. 

Setting alarms

Alarms are set and made using the Clock app. You can add more than one alarm, and we'll go through setting them up.

Open the Clock app from the Home screen.

2.

Tap the alarm clock icon in the top-left.

3.

Tap the + button at the bottom.

4.

Set the time you want the alarm to go off, and tap OK.

The alarm is now set for the time you chose. You can change some of the other options too:

  • Repeat: choose the days you want the alarm to go off.
  • Ringtone: change the sound you want the alarm to make.
  • Vibrate: tick the box if you want the phone to vibrate.
  • Label: give the alarm a name, like 'work' or 'school'.

Now that you know how to use some of the basics features of your phone, here are some tips to help you get a bit more from it.

OK Google

OK Google is a voice assistant that lets you talk to your phone to get things done.
When you're on the Home screen, say "OK Google", and your phone will start listening to you. You can then ask your phone to find information or perform tasks, like:

  • Reply to a message
  • Create a calendar event
  • Search for sports scores
  • Get directions

Moto Assist

Moto Assist is another digital assistant, which can manage some features of your phone for you. It can use the time, date, your calendar, and location to change settings on your phone - like automatically going into silent mode at night.

Open Moto Assist from the Home screen.

2.

Read the welcome message, then tap the arrow.

3.

Read through some more intro information, and press Next.

4.

To use Moto Assist, tap Yes, I'm in.

You'll need to agree to some data collection policies - tap Yes I'm in to allow it.

6.

Tap OK to link Moto Assist to your Google account.

7.

Read through some of the tips for using Moto Assist, and tap Got it.
