We've written this guide to help you with the initial Setup of your phone. From unpacking it, to setting up your emails and adding a lock screen.
Here's a list of everything you'll find in the box:
The first thing you'll need to do is insert the SIM card (the Moto E uses a MicroSIM). You can also increase the memory by adding a MicroSD card, if you have one.
The SIM and SD card slots are hidden behind a protective band that goes around the edge of the phone. Using your thumbnail in the notch at the bottom of the phone, prise the band away and lift it off.
With the cut-off corner first and the metal contacts facing down, push the Micro-SIM into the slot closest to the bottom of the phone.
You'll feel the SIM card click into place.
Remove the protective band following step 1 above.
With the metal contacts facing up and the narrow end first, insert the SD card into the slot nearest the top of the phone.
The SD card will click into place.
The first time you turn on the Moto E, you'll see the 'Setup Wizard'. This takes you through a series of steps to get your phone set up and ready to use. During the setup you might see a pop-up, asking you to choose a network. Just pick yours from the list and the Setup will continue.
Turn the phone on by holding down the Power button on the right-hand side. Choose your language from the list and press the arrow.
Tap on the name of your Wi-Fi network from the list, or if you don't want to connect to Wi-Fi, tap Skip.
Type your password in the box and tap Connect (you'll find the password on a sticker on your router).
Read the Privacy settings by tapping the link, then tap Accept and continue.
If you already have a Google account, type your email address, and press Next. To set up a new one, tap Create a new account and follow the instructions. You can also skip this part if you want, but without a Google account you won't be able to download apps, music, films, and games from the Play Store.
If you're signing in to your existing account, type your password and tap Next.
To add payment details to your Google account, pick a payment method, or tap Remind me later, then tap Next.
Choose which Google services you'd like to use. You can opt out of any of these by unticking the boxes. Then tap Next.
'Google Now' is Google's personal assistant and keeps you up to date with information like traffic, weather, and appointments. To use Google Now, choose Yes I'm in, or Skip if you don't want to use it. Then tap Next.
Finally, you can copy information from an old phone to your Moto E if you want. Tap Start Migrate to begin the transfer or tap Maybe later to skip this and finish the Setup.
The buttons at the bottom of the screen are used to get around the phone - here's what they do:
'Home' (circle): pressing this returns you to the Home screen from any screen or app.
'Back' (triangle): takes you back one screen.
'Menu' (square): displays previously used apps.
This part of our guide will show you how to connect to the internet using Wi-Fi.
From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Wi-Fi.
Tap the switch to turn Wi-Fi on.
Tap the network you want to connect to.
Type the Wi-Fi password, then tap Connect. If you're not sure what the password is, it should be printed on your router.
The word 'Connected' will appear beneath the name of the network.
If you're having any problems getting your mobile data working, you might need to put some manual settings in. Don't worry, we've got a guide to help you with it here.
While you probably added a Gmail account during the initial setup, this chapter will show you how to add other types of email accounts.
From the Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Accounts > Add account.
Choose Exchange for any work or education email accounts, or Personal (IMAP) for a personal account.
Enter your email address, and tap Next.
Type your password, then tap Next.
On the 'Account options' screen, you can change some of the settings, like set how often you want your phone to check for new emails, or whether you want to receive notifications. Make any adjustments you want, and tap Next
Type a Name for the account if you want, and enter Your name (this appears on all your outgoing emails).
Tap Next to finish the email Setup.
If you're having problems adding your email account, you can try installing it manually. Find out how to do this in our guide to email server settings.
