Setting up a Microsoft Lumia 640

This guide will go through setting up your Microsoft Lumia 640. We cover putting in the SIM and memory cards, emails, internet and lock screen.

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

Follow these instructions to learn how to insert your SIM and memory cards.

 
 
 
 
Inserting SIM
1.

Use your thumbs on the exposed corners of the back cover, and push it away from the body of the phone.

2.

Remove the battery if it's in.

3.

Slide the micro-SIM card on the slot marked 'SIM', on the bottom left. Make sure the metal contacts are facing down, and the cut-corner put in first.

4.

If you have a memory (MicroSD) card, slide this in the upper slot, near the rear camera. Make sure the gold coloured contacts are facing down, and the narrow end is in first.

5.

Replace the battery and back cover.

3. Completing the Lumia 640 Setup Wizard

When you turn on the phone for the first time, it'll display the 'Setup Wizard', a series of steps used to set up the phone so it's ready to use. Press and hold the power button on the right side of the phone for a few seconds, and it'll turn on.

Choose the language by tapping on the line and scrolling through the options (English UK is the default). Tap next.

Read the 'Terms of Use' and 'Privacy Statement', and tap accept.

3.

You'll be asked to connect to Wi-Fi. This is always recommended, as the phone will download updates, and if you go over your mobile data limit you'll be charged. Tap your wireless network's name.

4.

Type the password, usually found on a sticker on your router. Tap the Show password box if you want to check your typing, then tap done.

A Wi-Fi symbol (a fan) will appear at the top. Tap new.

You'll be asked to turn on Wi-Fi sense, which lets you share your Wi-Fi with your contacts, if they're also running Windows 8.1 This means your friends can connect to Wi-Fi without typing the password. Untick the boxes if you don't want to use this, then tap next.

7.

You'll be asked how to set up your phone. Tap recommended to use the standard settings, or custom if you want to choose the settings yourself.

The time and region options are set to UK by default, but you can tap each line if you want to change them.

If you're changing the date, scroll through the options, and tap the tick. Do the same for the time.

You'll be asked to add a Microsoft account, which is the most important account you can add to a Windows Phone. Without one you won't be able to download apps from the Windows Store, back up your data, or operate the phone properly.

If you have an email ending with 'hotmail.com', 'live.com', 'outlook.com', or their 'co.uk' versions, tap sign in. If you don't, tap create one to make a free Microsoft account.

Type your email address and password, then tap next.

13.

If you've used a Windows Phone before, you can restore a backup. Tap the phone name you want to restore from, and choose your backup. Or, tap don't restore then next.

You'll be asked to use a Microsoft account to back up your phone. It can upload your photos to OneDrive (Microsoft's cloud service) through Wi-Fi, and back up settings and texts. Tap yes to set this up, or not now to skip.

'Cortana' is Microsoft's digital assistant, and can help you manage your contacts, calendars, emails etc. Tap sure, or not now, thanks if you don't want to use it (you can switch it on at any time).

Tap next.

The final screen asks if you want to send feedback information. Untick the box if you like, then tap next.

Touchscreen buttons

The three buttons at the bottom are used to navigate through the phone:

  • 'Home' (Windows key): this takes you back to the Home screen.
  • 'Back' (arrow): this takes you back one screen.
  • 'Search' (magnifying glass): this lets you search on the phone.

 

4. Connecting to the internet

The Lumia 640 can connect to the internet through Wi-Fi and mobile data. Below are steps for how to do each.

Swipe right-to-left on the Home screen to open the Apps list.

Tap Settings.

3.

Tap Wi-Fi.

4.

Tap your wireless network name.

5.

Tap the password, then tap Done.

6.

You'll see your network name listed under the 'Connected to' heading, and a Wi-Fi symbol next to the signal bars.

Turning mobile data on or off

Your phone will try to connect to mobile data when you turn it on for the first time. You'll see a letter at the top, which shows you're connected. You could see 4G, H, 3G, E, or G.

Swipe right-to-left to go to your Apps.

Tap Settings.

3.

You'll need to turn off Wi-Fi to check the mobile internet connection. Tap Wi-Fi.

Tap the Wi-Fi switch. Tap the back arrow.

Tap mobile+SIM.

6.

Make sure the data connection switch is on.

7.

If you're still not connected, scroll down and tap SIM settings.

8.

The 'Mobile connection profile' shows the networks your phone is using. If it's not the right network, tap this box and choose the correct settings.

5. Setting up new email accounts

Find your account type in the list, and tap it. If it's an education or work address, tap Exchange. If it's a personal account, tap other account.

Type the email address and password, then tap SIGN IN.

7.

Accept the 'Terms of service'.

You'll see the account listed onscreen.

6. Setting up a lock screen
