We've written this guide to help you get your new (or factory reset) Microsoft Lumia 535 set up, and ready for use. We cover everything from inserting the SIM card, to adding email accounts.
Here's a list of the things you'll find in the box:
The Lumia 535 takes a MicroSIM, and if you want to increase the memory, you can also add a MicroSD card. These steps will show you how to do both.
The first thing you'll need to do is remove the back cover, which wraps around the edge of your phone. Put your thumb in the middle of the back cover and using your fingertips, carefully pull the edge of the cover away until you feel it release.
The SIM card goes into the slot at the top of the battery compartment. If the battery is already in the phone, you'll need to take it out. With the metal contacts facing down and the cut-off corner inserted first, push the SIM card under the lip, into the phone.
If you don't want to add a memory card, replace the battery and cover, making sure it's firmly in place.
Follow step one above to remove the back cover.
The MicroSD card goes into a slot on the side of the phone, just above the SIM card slot. With the metal contacts facing down, and the narrow end first, push the memory card into the slot.
With the memory card in place, you can replace the cover, making sure it's securely in place.
When you turn the phone on, the first thing you'll see is the Setup Wizard, which will help you get your phone ready for use. During the Setup you might see a pop-up asking you to choose a network, just tap yours, then tap Ok.
Choose your language from the list, and tap next.
Tap on the name of your WiFi network, or tap skip if you don't want to connect to Wi-Fi.
Type your password, and tap done. If your not sure what your password is, it's usually printed on your router.
If successful, you'll see the word 'connected' below the name of your network.
'Wi-Fi Sense' manages your phone's internet connection and also shares your Wi-Fi password with your contacts, so they can connect to your Wi-Fi without having to enter a password. You can opt out of this if you want, by unticking the boxes, then tap next.
To set your phone up using the most common settings, tap recommended. Tap custom if you want to go through the settings in more detail.
Pick your country/region and time zone, then tap next.
A 'Microsoft account' lets you sync your photos, contacts, music, settings, and passwords with your PC or Xbox. You'll also need one to buy apps from the Microsoft store. Set up a new account by tapping create one, or if you already have an account, tap sign in.
If you've used the same Microsoft account on another phone, you'll be asked if you want to restore data from it. To restore from an old phone, tap the backup you want to use, or tap don't restore to skip this. Tap next.
If you want to use your Microsoft account to backup your phone, tap yes, or tap not now to skip this.
'Cortana' is Microsoft's personal assistant and can help you manage lots of things, including calendar events, contacts and emails. Turn Cortana on by tapping sure, or tap not now, thanks to skip this.
You'll see a screen telling you you're almost done, tap next, then tap next again to finish the Setup.
There are 2 ways you can connect to the internet, using Wi-Fi, or mobile data - we'll show you how to do both in this chapter of the guide.
From your Home screen, go to settings > WiFi.
It it's not already on, tap the switch.
Tap on the name of your network.
Type your network password, and tap done. If you're not sure what your password is, it should be printed on your router.
When it connects, you'll see the word 'connected' below your network.
From the Home screen, go to settings > mobile+SIM.
Tap the Data connection switch to turn it on.
If you’re having problems connecting your phone to mobile internet, we have dedicated guides that explain how to manually connect.
Your Lumia 535 can manage lots of different email accounts, here's how to add new accounts to your phone.
From your Home screen, go to settings > email+accounts > add an account.
Choose the type of account you'd like to add (if yours isn't listed, tap other account).
Type your email address and password, then tap Sign in.
Depending on the type of account you're adding, you may need to accept the 'terms of service'. Read them if you want by tapping the links, then tap Accept.
If you’re having any problems adding your email account, our guide to email server settings will help out.
We always recommend setting up a lock screen on your phone, to protect any personal information stored on it. If you didn't add one as part of the Setup, these steps will show you how.
Swipe left from your Home screen to open the Apps menu.
Go to Settings > lock screen.
At the bottom of the screen, tap the Password button to turn it on.
Type a pin number into the New password box to set this as your new unlock code. Then type it in again to confirm it.
Tap done to finish setting up your screen lock.
