Factory resetting your Microsoft Lumia 535

This guide shows you how to factory reset (also known as a 'hard reset') your Microsoft Lumia 535. If you want to save your stuff first, we've covered that too.

When you factory reset your phone all the stuff on it will be deleted, and it'll be like it was when the phone was new. You can back up things like your contacts, photos, music and videos to a computer so that you don't lose them in the reset. Have a look at our guide to backing up a smartphone to a computer if you need help with it.

Stuff like messages, contacts and calendar entries will be backed up to your Microsoft account (as long as there's one on the phone). When the phone is being set up again, sign in with the account that was on it before and everything will come back automatically. Make sure you've got the right account details!

You'll need to do the reset this way if you can't get into your phone. It's a combination of buttons that need to be pressed exactly, so read through the steps and then have a go.

2.

Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons together.

3.

When you feel the phone vibrate, let go of the Power button but keep holding the Volume down button.

If you've lost your phone and need to wipe it, remotely wiping the phone is the next best option to make sure your personal data is totally gone. To remotely wipe your Lumia 535, you'll need to know your Microsoft account's email address and password, and have access to a computer or other web-connected device.

1.

Go to My Devices on a computer and log in with your Microsoft email address and password.

2.

The phones connected to the account will be shown. Find the Lumia 535 and click Find my phone next to it.

3.

When the information page comes up, click Erase.

4.

Tick the box to say that you want to wipe the phone, then click Erase again.

The instruction will be sent, and the next time your phone gets an internet connection, it'll erase itself.
