Kit Guide: LG Stylus 2 - setting it up

This guide takes you through setting up a new Stylus 2. It covers everything you need to get it working the way you want, from inserting the SIM to keeping your information private with a lock screen.

1. Box contents

Below is a list of the things you'll find in the box when you first open it:

  • LG Stylus 2 with removable stylus
  • Mains adaptor
  • USB cable
  • Wired headset
  • Information pack

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

The steps below show you how to install the NanoSIM card and MicroSD card, if you have one.

Remove the back cover using a thumbnail in the slot on the left hand edge of the phone.

The SIM and memory cards both go into same slot at the top of the battery compartment. Slide the NanoSIM into the lower part of the tray with the metal contacts facing down.

3.

To install a MicroSD card, slide it into the top part of the tray with the metal contacts facing down.

4.

Replace the battery, making sure the metal contacts are lined up with the ones on the phone.

3. Completing the LG Stylus 2 Setup Wizard

When you first turn the phone on, you'll see the 'Setup Wizard', which helps you get the phone working the way you want. At any point during the set up, a window might appear asking you to choose your service provider. If it does, just choose it from the list.

Tap the language you'd like to use, then tap the Right arrow.

To use the internet when you're out and about, you'll need to choose Mobile network and Wi-Fi. If you want to connect using Wi-Fi only, choose that option. Tap NEXT.

Tap the name of the network you'd like to connect to, or tap SKIP if you don't want to connect to Wi-Fi.

If you're connecting to Wi-Fi, type the wireless password in the box, which is usually printed on your router. Tap connect.

If you're upgrading from another Android smartphone you can choose to Copy Google accounts.... Or to set up as a new phone, choose No, thanks. Then tap NEXT.

You'll need to either sign into your Google account, or add a new one. Without one, you won't be able to download apps or backup your phone. If you already have a Google account (an email address ending '@googlemail.com' or '@gmail.com'), type your email address and tap NEXT.

If you don't have a Google account, you can set one up by tapping create a new account and filling in the onscreen form.

You'll need to agree to Google's 'Terms of Service' and 'Privacy Policy'. Click the links to read them and tap Accept.

10.

You'll have the option to opt out of any of the services by tapping the box to untick it:

  • Automatically 'Backup' your data using your Google account.
  • Use 'Location' services to improve mapping and internet searches.
  • 'Feedback information' to help improve Android.

When you've made your choices, tap NEXT to continue.

If you want to add payment details so you can buy apps and games from the Play Store, tap the billing option you want to use, or tap No, thanks to skip this. Then tap NEXT.

13.

If you've used Android in the past, you might be asked to restore your apps and data from an old phone. Tap the phone you'd like to restore apps and data from, and tap Next to continue.

To set up the Stylus 2 as a new phone, scroll down and tap Set up as new device.

We cover the 'screen lock' in a later chapter of this guide, so tap SKIP, then confirm that you want to skip it for now.

You'll need to agree to the 'End User Licence Agreement' by tapping the box to tick it.

Tap Done to close the Setup Wizard.

4. Connecting to the Internet

These steps will show you how to connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network.

From the Home screen go to Apps > Settings > Wi-Fi. Make sure that Wi-Fi is turned on, the switch should be blue.

Choose the name of the network you'd like to connect to by tapping it.

Type the password into the box, this is usually printed on your router. Check your typing by ticking the Show password box, then tap Connect.

You'll see the word 'Connected' next to your network.

Turning mobile data on or off

From the Home screen, open Settings.

On the 'Networks' tab, make sure 'Mobile data' is turned On.

5. Adding an email account to the Stylus 2

From your Home screen go to Apps > Settings > Accounts and sync > Add account.

From the list, pick the type of account you'd like to add. For anything other than Gmail, you can usually choose 'POP3' or 'IMAP'. If you have an 'Exchange' account, usually provided by employers, tap Microsoft Exchange.

Type your email address, and tap Next. Or to set up a new account, tap create a new account and follow the steps.

Type your password, and tap Next.

5.

Depending on the type of account you're adding, you might need to agree to the 'Terms of Service'. Tap the links to read these, then tap OK.

6.

Tap Done to finish setting up the email.

7.

You can add more email accounts from here if you like. Tap the Home icon to return to the Home screen.

If your account didn't set up automatically you'll be taken back to the email address and password screen. Check your email address and password are right. If they are, you’ll need to manually add your email account. You can find out how in our guide to email server settings.

6. Setting up a lock screen

If you didn’t set up a lock screen as part of the phone’s initial Setup, you can follow these steps to add one.

From the Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Display > Lock screen.

2.

Tap Select screen lock and choose the type of lock you want to add by tapping Pattern, PIN, or Password.

You can choose whether you want to enter your PIN or password when you turn your phone on. If you don't want to do this, tap No, thanks.

Enter the code you want to use, then tap Next. If you choose a pattern, you'll also need to set a PIN as a backup.

5.

Confirm the code by typing it again, and tap OK.

6.

When the screen is locked, you'll receive notifications and can choose Show all notification content, Hide sensitive content (this tells you that you have a notification, but doesn't show the details), or Don't show notifications. Tap the one you want to set, then tap OK.

7.

You can choose how quickly the lock screen is set by tapping Lock timer, and picking one of the options.
