Kit Guide: LG K4 - setting it up

This guide will take you through getting your LG K4 fully set up and ready to use. We cover what's in the box, through to securing the phone with a lock screen.

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

Your LG K4 uses a MicroSIM, and you can add some extra storage with a MicroSD card. Both these cards go under the back cover, so you'll need to remove that first.

At the bottom of the phone is charging port, which can be used as a notch. Use your thumbnail in here to prise the back cover away from the phone.

Slide the SIM card into the slot underneath the camera, with the metal contacts facing down, and the cut-off corner going in first.

3.

If you're using a MicroSD card, slide it into the slot on the left-hand side, again with the metal contacts facing down, and the slimmer end going in first.

4.

Put the battery in, using the metal contacts to make sure it goes in the right way.

5.

Use the camera hole to line the back cover up, then press around the edges to snap it into place.

6.

Once everything is put together, press and hold the power button on the right-hand side for a few seconds to turn the phone on.

3. Completing the LG Setup Wizard

When the LG K4 is turned on for the first time, it starts the 'Setup Wizard'. This is a series of steps that will take you through getting the phone set up and ready. As you are going through the set up, you might get a 'SIM Provider' pop-up - tap the name of your network, and your phone will download the right settings for you.

Choose your language, and then tap Next.

To use mobile data and Wi-Fi, tick both boxes at the top.

To connect to Wi-Fi, tap the network you want to connect to, and type the password. If you're not too sure what this is, you can usually find it on your router.

Once you've typed the password, tap Connect. If this works, you should see the word 'Connected' underneath the chosen Wi-Fi, and you'll see the Wi-Fi signal bars at the top of the screen. Tap Next.

If you've used an Android phone before, you can copy information from it to this K4. Your other phone will need to have NFC (Near Field Connection) for this to work - if it does, tap Copy Google accounts, apps and other data from your other device, and then tap Next. If your other phone doesn't have NFC, or you don't want to transfer anything from it, tap No, thanks and press Next.

If you have a Google account, which is needed to download apps and games, type it in and press Next. If you don't have an account and want to create one, tap Or create new account, and fill out the required info.

If you're signing into an account, type your password and press Next.

You'll have to agree to Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, which you can read by tapping them. Tap Accept to agree and carry on.

Scroll through the available Google Services, and tick the boxes for ones you want to use on your phone.

Tap Next.

You might be asked to add some payment info to your Google account, which can be used to buy games, music and films from the Play Store. To do this now, tap a payment method type, tap Continue, and fill in the payment details. To skip this, tap remind me later, then tap Continue.

If you have another email account you want to add, tap Personal, then tap Next. To skip this, tap Not now, then press Next.

To protect your phone with a lock screen, which'll help keep your photos, contacts and messages safe, tick the box and tap Next.

If you're adding a lock screen, choose the type you want to use:

  • Knock code: a pattern of taps on the screen
  • Pattern: draw a pattern across a grid of dots
  • PIN: a four digit code
  • Password: a mix of numbers and letters

To be super-secure, your phone can ask for the screen lock before even turning on. Choose if you want this, then tap Next.

Confirm your screen lock once more.

Choose which notifications you want to see on your Home screen, then tap OK.

  1. If your Google account has any backups from other phones on it, you can restore them now. To do this, choose a backup, and tap Done. To skip this, choose Set up as new device, and tap Done.

Once you've chosen a restore option, tap Next.

Read through the 'End User License Agreement', then tick the I agree box and press Next.

You'll also need to read through the Software Update and Activity logs agreements. Tick the I agree boxes, and then tap Done.

The Setup Wizard is now finished, and you will looking at the Home screen. The bottom row of icons are for the most commonly used apps: Phone, Contacts, Chrome and Messages. In the middle is the Apps button, which will show you all the other apps installed on your phone.

Touchscreen buttons

'Back' (triangle): takes you back one screen, or closes an app.

'Home' (circle): this will always take you back to the Home screen.

'Menu' (square): shows apps you've opened recently, and lets you jump between them.

4. Connecting to the Internet

To use many of your phone’s best features, like downloading apps, it will need an internet connection. You can connect to the internet using Wi-Fi or mobile data, and we'll take you through checking both are working below.

Tap the Apps button, then tap on Settings.

Tap on the Networks tab at the top, then tap Wi-Fi.

Check that the Wi-Fi switch is turned on - tap it if it's not.

Tap the network you want to connect to, and type in the password. If you're not sure what this is, you can normally find it on your router.

The Wi-Fi you chose should now say the word 'Connected' underneath it, and you'll see the Wi-Fi signal bars at the top of the screen.

Turning mobile data on or off

Your K4 will normally try and use Wi-Fi instead of mobile data, so you'll need to turn this off first. If mobile data is working, you should see '4G' or '3G' indicator at the top of the screen, though you may see 'E' or '2G' if your connection isn't great.

Open up Settings.

Tap the switch next to Wi-Fi to turn this off.

Tap the switch next to Mobile data to turn this on.

Check the top of the screen for a mobile data indicator.

If you're having any problems with connecting your K4 to mobile data, you'll have to manually type in the 'APN settings', which it needs to connect to mobile data. We've got a guide for each network and how to set them up here.

5. Setting up new email accounts

Your phone can work with all types of email account, so you can read and send emails and you'll get notified when new emails come in.

Open Settings and tap the General tab on the right.

Tap Add account.

Choose the type of account you want to add. For personal email, choose Email, and for work or school accounts, tap Microsoft Exchange.

Type in your email address, then tap Next.

Type in your password for your account.

You might be given some account options, like 'Sync Frequency', which is how often the phone checks for new email. Choose the options you want, and tap Next.

7.

Give the account a name, and type your name in the bottom box - this will show on emails you send.

Tap Next.

Your email account is now set up, and you can get to your emails by opening the Email app from the Home screen.

If your account doesn't set up, you'll need to provide the settings for it. You can find the settings for most accounts in our guide to email server settings.

6. Setting up a lock screen

You can protect the photos, messages and other data on your phone by setting up the lock screen. There are a few different types of lock screen you can have, and we'll go through each of these and how to set them up below.

Open up Settings.

Tap the Display tab at the top, and choose Lock screen.

Tap Select screen lock.

4.

Tap, draw or type your chosen lock type.

Confirm it once more.

7.

Choose what notifications you want to show on the lock screen, and tap OK.
