Kit Guide: Huawei P8 - setting it up

This guide takes you through setting up a new Huawei P8. You'll find everything you need to get started with your new phone.

Inserting your SIM & memory cards

The P8 takes a NanoSIM, which goes into a tray on the right-hand edge of the phone. You can also increase the phone's memory using a MicroSD card, which goes into the tray just below the SIM card.

Inserting the SIM card

1.

Using the SIM removal tool, push the pointed end into the small hole just below the bottom tray, on the right-hand edge of the phone.

2.

When the tray releases, gently pull it out.

3.

The SIM card goes into the slot, with the metal contacts facing down.

Inserting the memory card

1.

The memory card slots into the same tray as the SIM card.

2.

Push the pointed end of the tool into the small hole above the top tray, and gently pull it out.

3.

Put the MicroSD card into the slot, with the metal contacts facing down and the narrow end inserted first.

Completing the Huawei P8 Setup Wizard

The first time you turn on your P8 you'll see the 'Setup Wizard', which helps you get the phone ready for use. During the Setup, you might see a pop-up asking you to choose your mobile network. Tap your network name, then tap OK to continue setting up your phone.

Choose your preferred language, then tap Next.

Make sure the Wi-Fi switch is blue and tap on your Wi-fi network name. You can Skip connecting to Wi-Fi, but your phone will download updates after the Setup finishes, which might use a lot of mobile data.

3.

Type the network password (you'll find it on a sticker on your router). Tap the eye at the end of the password box to check your typing, then tap Connect.

4.

You'll need to agree to the 'Terms and conditions' by tapping Agree. Then tap Next.

'Wi-Fi+' switches between Wi-Fi and mobile data automatically to give the best performance. If you'd rather control this yourself, tap Do not allow, or to use the 'Wi-Fi+ enhanced internet experience', tap Allow.

If you've used Android before, you can copy your accounts, apps, and data using 'NFC' (Near Field Communication). If you don't want to do this, tap Skip. Make your choice and tap Next.

7.

You'll be asked to set up your Google account. If you already have one, type your Gmail address to sign in, or choose create a new account, then tap Next.

8.

Type your Gmail password and tap Next. If you're creating a new account, fill in the form.

You'll need to agree to Google's 'Terms of service' by tapping Accept.

10.

If you want to add payment information (for buying apps from the Play Store), choose which method you want to use and tap Next, or tap Remind me later to skip this and finish the Setup.

Touchscreen buttons

With the Setup Wizard complete, you'll be looking at the Home screen. At the bottom is the navigation bar which shows the virtual 'buttons' used to get around the phone's menus.

'Home' (circle): Always brings you back to the Home screen.

'Back' (triangle): Takes you back one screen in menus and apps.

'Recent apps' (square): Shows the apps that are running in the background, and lets you switch between them.

 

Connecting to the Internet

Connecting the P8 to a Wi-Fi network

Swipe down from the top of the screen, and hold your finger on the Wi-Fi symbol. Check that the Wi-Fi switch is turned on.

2.

Tap the name of your wireless network and enter the password.

3.

Tap Connect, and you'll see the word 'Connected' appear below your network name.

Turning mobile data on or off

1.

Swipe down from the top of the screen, then tap and hold the Mobile network symbol.

2.

Tap the Mobile Data switch to turn it on or off.

Setting up new email accounts

To set up email accounts on your phone, you’ll need to know which type of account you have. Work or education accounts are usually 'Exchange', most personal email accounts are 'IMAP', but some older providers might still use 'POP3'.

From your Home screen, go to Settings Account Add account.

2.

Choose the type of account you want to add.

3.

Type your email address and password, then tap Next.

4.

You can change some of the email settings, like how often the phone checks for new messages, or whether you'd like to be notified when you receive a new message. When you're happy with the settings, tap Next. Tap Done to complete the email setup.

Setting up a lock screen

We always recommend protecting your accounts and information with a lock screen, so if you didn’t do it as part of the Setup, follow these steps to add one.

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Screen lock & passwords.

2.

Make sure the Screen Lock button is switched on, then tap to choose what type of unlock method you'd like to use:

  • None is an insecure method with just a swipe to unlock the screen
  • Pattern means you draw lines on a grid of dots
  • PIN is a short code made with at least four numbers
  • Password is a longer code using letters, numbers and special characters

Type your unlock PIN or Password, then tap OK.

4.

You'll need to type it again to confirm, then tap OK to finish setting up the screen lock.
