Setting up a Huawei Mate 9

This guide will help you set up your Huawei Mate 9. We've covered everything from putting the SIM card in, to protecting the phone with a lock screen.

Inserting the SIM and memory card

The SIM card goes into a tray that slides into the right-hand side of the phone, towards the bottom. Get the SIM tool that comes with the phone and push the pointy end into the hole on the tray. You'll feel it pop out, so slide the tray out and line the SIM card up on the lower part of it. Make sure the gold contacts are touching the tray, then slide it back into the phone until it clicks into place.

 
 
 
 
Insert SIM

The memory card goes in the same tray, but at the top. Line up the memory card with the slot at the top of the tray and again, make sure the gold contacts are facing down. Then you can slide the tray back into the phone.

 

Completing the Mate 9 Setup Wizard

The first time you turn the phone on, there's some steps you need to do to set it up. This guide will get you through them as quickly as possible so you can start using your Mate 9.

First, choose your language. 'English (United Kingdom)' should be chosen already, but you can press the arrow to change it. Press Next when you've picked.

You'll have to accept the Terms and Conditions to use the phone. Tap Agree.

Tap Agree once more. You can tap the link if you want to read more about the Terms and Conditions.

To use 'Weather service', choose Agree, or if you're not bothered, press Disagree.

Press Agree to use the 'Wi-Fi+ Service' or Disagree if you're not interested.

Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.

Type in the Wi-Fi password then tap Connect.

When it's done your network name will be showing in blue. Press Next.

Sign into Google so that you can start downloading apps straight away. Type in your Google email address then tap Next, or you can set one up by tapping Or create a new account.

Type in your password then tap Next.

Signing in mean accepting some more Terms and Conditions so tap Accept.

Google have some services that run in the background. To use them, leave the switch turned on. Press Next.

Setting up a lock screen now can make the rest of it a bit of a pain, so we'll cover it later. Press Skip.

You'll be warned about skipping. Just press Skip anyway.

To get any apps and information you've used with Android before, press Keep your apps and data, or for a fresh setup, press Set up as new.

If you want to use Huawei's extra services you can sign in, or if you're not bothered, press Skip.

If you've got any data you want to put on your phone, choose a back up. You can set it up as a new phone instead by choosing Set as new phone.

Read the informaiton about fingerprint control, then press Next.

To set your fingerprint up, press Enrol, or Skip to do it later.

That's all the steps done. Press Get started.

Touchscreen Buttons

Under the main screen are some touch buttons that you'll use to get around the phone. This is what they are and what they do:

  • Back (left arrow) - tap to go back to the last screen.
  • Home (circle) - tap to get back to the Home screen from anywhere in the phone.
  • Recent apps (square) - press to see a list of recently used apps.

 

Connecting to the internet

Lots of the apps and games you use, especially social media apps, use the internet to work properly. This is how to keep your phone connected to the internet.

Open the Settings and choose Wi-Fi.

Use the switch to turn Wi-Fi on, then tap the network you want to connect to.

Type in the Wi-Fi password and tap Connect.

Open the Settings and choose More.

Choose Mobile network settings.

3.

Use the switch next to Mobile data to turn it on and off.

Setting up new email accounts

This is how to add new email accounts to your phone, so that you can keep all your emails in one place.

Open the phones Settings and choose Accounts.

Press Add account.

3.

Choose the account type. It's usually IMAP but work or education accounts could be Exchange.

Type in your email address and press Next.

Type in your password and press Next.

6.

You need to agree to the Terms and Conditions so press Accept.

7.

Choose whether you want to use the Google services or not, then press Next.

Setting up a lock screen

Protecting your phone with a lock screen keeps other people out of your information. This is how to set one up.

Open the Settings and choose Screen lock and passwords.

Choose Password to set up a new lock screen.

3.

Choose the type of lock you want. We recommend 'PIN' or 'Password' because they're the safest.

4.

Type in the PIN or Password you want to use, then press Continue.

Type in the PIN or Password again to confirm it, then press OK.

6.

Set up a fingerprint by choosing Enrol, or press Cancel if you're not bothered.
