Importing contacts from an Android Phone

There are two ways of transferring contacts from an Android phone to an HTC - using the HTC Transfer Tool, or using a Google account.

Transfer data using the HTC Transfer Tool

Follow these steps on the phone or tablet you're transferring the contacts to.

From the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.

2.

Scroll down to the Personal section, and tap Get content from another phone.

3.

Choose HTC Android phone if the old phone's also an HTC, or Other Android phone for all other manufacturers.

4.

Click the Allow button to let the tool transfer the data. Then tap Next.

You'll see some instructions telling you how to transfer the contacts, and you'll see a 'PIN code'. Make a note of this.

On your old phone, follow these steps.

1.

From the Home screen, tap on the Play Store.

2.

Tap in the search box at the top, and look for 'HTC Transfer Tool', then tap the green Install button.

3.

Tap Accept or Allow to install the app.

4.

When the app finishes installing, tap Open.

5.

Check that the code matches the one you made a note of, then tap Next or Confirm on both phones.

6.

Choose the data you want to transfer by ticking each item.

7.

Press Transfer or Start to begin sending the data to the HTC phone.

8.

When it's finished, press Done.

Transfer contacts using a Google account

To transfer contacts using a Google account, you'll need to make sure the same account has been added to both phones. When you've signed in on both phones, follow these steps on the old phone.

From the Home screen, tap on the Contacts app.

2.

Tap on the Menu, or More button.

3.

Tap on the Import/Export option. You might need to press Settings first.

4.

Tap Move or copy device contacts to Google, then tap Confirm.

The contacts will be synced from the old phone to the Google account, and then to the HTC Android phone. If the old phone doesn't give you the option to export, you might need to move them using a SIM or memory card - we go through this in a later chapter.

Importing contacts from an iPhone

There are two ways of transferring data from an iPhone to an HTC Android device - using HTC Sync Manager, or transferring contacts from your iCloud account to your Google account.

Transferring data using the HTC Sync Manager

Before you start, you'll need to have an up to date backup of your iPhone in iTunes, and have the HTC Sync Manager software installed on your computer. For help doing this, have a look at our guide to creating an iPhone backup with iTunes. You can download and install the HTC Sync Manager to your computer here.

When you're ready to start, here's how it's done.

From the Home screen, tap Settings.

2.

Scroll down to the Personal section, then tap Get content from another phone.

3.

Choose iPhone.

4.

Tap Restore from iTunes backup.

5.

Use a USB cable to connect your HTC Android device to your computer, and open the HTC Sync Manager program.

6.

On the left-hand column, click Transfer & Backup. Then click Get Started, in the iPhone section.

7.

Pick the most recent backup, and then click OK. Choose which items you want to transfer by ticking the boxes.

8.

Press Start to get the transfer started. Once the transfer has finished, close the HTC Transfer tool.

Exporting from your iCloud account to your Google account

To do this, you'll need a computer with internet access, and you'll need login details for both your iCloud, and Google accounts.

Follow these steps on your old iPhone to 'merge' your contacts with iCloud:

1.

From the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.

2.

Scroll down, and tap on iCloud.

3.

Make sure the switch next to Contacts is turned on. Turn it on if it is currently off.

4.

Tap the Merge button.

The next steps are done on the iCloud website using your computer.

5.

Open your internet browser and go to www.icloud.com.

6.

Type in your Apple ID email address and password. Click the right arrow to sign in.

7.

When signed in, click the Contacts icon.

8.

When your contacts show, click the gear icon in the bottom left corner.

9.

In the menu that appears, click Select All.

10.

Click the gear icon again, and now click Export vCard.

11.

Your computer should now save the contacts to a vCard file in your computer's Downloads folder.

12.

If prompted, choose to save or save as, and then save the file to your Downloads folder, and close the iCloud website.

These steps are done on the Google website, using your computer.

13.

Open your internet browser, and go to www.google.com/contacts.

14.

Type in your Gmail address, and click Next.

15.

Type in your Gmail password, and click Sign in.

16.

When the page loads, click More in the left hand column.

17.

Click Import CSV or vCard file Go to old contacts.

18.

Click More at the top of the list.

19.

Click Import > Choose file button, then choose the file that was downloaded in step 11.

20.

Click the Import button to start copying the contacts to your Google account. They will then sync to your ATC Android device.

Importing contacts from a Blackberry

To transfer contacts from a Blackberry to your HTC Android device, you'll need a computer with the Blackberry Desktop Software installed. You can download and install the software here.

1.

Use a USB cable to connect the Blackberry to your computer.

2.

Open the Blackberry Desktop Software, and it should recognise the connected BlackBerry.

3.

Click the Organizer button on the left-hand column, and click the Contacts box.

4.

Choose one way sync to your computer only as the 'Sync direction'.

5.

Pick Windows Contacts as the 'Contacts' account.

6.

Click the OK button to save these sync settings.

7.

Click the Sync Organizer button in the bottom right corner to start the transfer from your Blackberry to the computer.

8.

When it's done, close the Blackberry Desktop Software and unplug the Blackberry.

The contacts will now be stored in a folder called 'Contacts' on your computer. Follow these steps to save them to a 'CSV' file that can be imported to your Google account.

9.

Click the Start button in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Click on File Explorer This PC

11.

Double-click the C: drive.

12.

Double-click the Users folder.

13.

Double-click your username.

14.

Double click the Contacts folder.

15.

Click Organize Select all Export.

16.

Click on CSV, then click Export.

17.

Click the Browse button, then choose your Downloads folder.

18.

Type in a name for the file, and then click Save.

19.

Close the File Explorer.

These steps will help you to import the CSV file into your Google account.

20.

Open your internet browser, and go to www.google.com/contacts.

21.

Type in your Gmail address and click Next.

22.

Type in your Gmail password, and click Sign in.

23.

When the page loads, click More Import CSV or vCard file.

24.

Click Go to old contacts More Import.

25.

Click the Choose file button, then pick the file that was saved to your Downloads folder in step 18.

26.

Click the Import button to start copying the contacts to your Google account. When it's done, the data will sync to your HTC Android device.

Importing contacts from a Windows Phone

Transferring contacts from a Windows Phone requires access to a computer, and you'll need to know the login details for both your Microsoft account and Google account.

1.

Open your internet browser, and go to www.people.live.com.

2.

Type in your Microsoft account email address and password, then click sign in.

3.

Click the Manage button at the top.

4.

Click Export for Outlook.com and other services.

The website will download a 'CSV' file to your computer, and should save it in your 'Downloads' folder. If prompted, click to save the file to your Downloads folder, then close the Microsoft website.

The next steps will show you how to import CSV file to your Google account.

5.

Open your internet browser, and go to www.google.com/contacts.

6.

Type in your Gmail address, and click Next.

7.

Type in your Gmail password, then click Sign in.

8.

When the page loads, click More in the left hand column.

9.

Click Import CSV or vCard file Go to old contacts.

10.

Click More Import.

11.

Click the Choose file button, then choose the file that was saved to your Downloads folder in step 5.

12.

Click the Import button to start copying the contacts to your Google account, when it's done, they'll sync to your HTC.

Importing contacts using a SIM or memory card

A SIM, or memory card can be used to transfer the contacts from the old device to your HTC Android device.

Exporting contacts to a SIM or memory card

These steps will help you transfer contacts from your old device using a SIM, or memory card. The steps might vary slightly, depending on the model of phone or tablet you're using.

From the old device's Home screen, tap on Contacts.

Tap the Menu or More button.

Tap Export, and choose SIM, or memory card as the location.

If you have the option, tap Select all.

Confirm by pressing Next, Export or Confirm.

Remove the SIM or memory card from the old device, and insert into the HTC Android device to import the contacts.

Importing to a HTC Android device

Choose where to save the contacts - to the internal memory, or your Google account.

Tap on the Import button at the bottom of the screen to start the transfer.

Adding new contacts

From the Home screen, tap on the Contacts icon.

2.

Tap the + button in the top right corner.

3.

Choose where you want to save the contact to - SIM card, Device memory, or Google account.

4.

Type in the contact's name, phone number and other information. Then tap the tick to save the contact.
