Kit Guide: Setting up a HTC 10

We've written this guide to help you get your HTC 10 set up. We cover the essentials, from inserting your SIM to adding a lock screen.

1. Box contents

These are the items you'll find in the box:

 

  • HTC 10
  • USB mains adaptor
  • USB cable
  • Wired headphones (with spare ear buds)
  • Information pack (with SIM tool)

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

To install your nano-SIM and memory (microSD) card:

Use the pin end of the SIM tool in the pinhole on the right-hand edge of the tray, above the volume and power buttons. Push in and the tray will pop out.

2.

Put your nano-SIM in the tray, with the metal contacts facing up, and the cut-off corner in the correct place.  

3.

Slide the tray back in the phone.

4.

If you have a memory card, use the SIM tool in the pinhole on the left-hand side, and pull out the tray.

5.

Put your memory card in the tray, with the gold-coloured contacts facing up, and the narrow end pointed towards the phone.

6.

Slide the tray back in the phone.

Charging the battery

1.

Connect the mains adapter to the micro-USB cable, then connect the other end to the port on the bottom of the HTC 10.

2.

If the battery is fully charged, you'll see a solid green LED above the screen.

3.

If it's charging it'll flash orange, but you can still work through the steps in this guide.

3. Completing the HTC 10 Setup Wizard

When you turn on your phone for the first time you'll see the 'Setup Wizard', which will help set up your phone. 

At some point in the Setup, you might be asked to choose your mobile network from a list. Tap on your network name then Next.

Press the power button on the right side of the phone, and hold it in for a few seconds until it turns on.

2.

Tap the language box and choose your language. Tap Start.

Read through the 'Terms of use' and tap the down arrow.

4.

Tap the other links to read more documents if you want, then tap Next.

5.

The tickbox lets your phone use mobile data. You can untick the box if you don't want to use mobile data. Below this is a list of wireless networks. Tap your Wi-Fi network.

Type your Wi-Fi password, which can be found on a sticker on your router. Tap Connect.

7.

You'll see the word 'Connected' under your network name, and the Wi-Fi symbol (a fan) at the top. Tap Next.

8.

If the mobile network box is ticked, you'll be asked to turn on mobile data. Tap OK to accept this, or tap Cancel and untick the box, then tap Next.

9.

You'll be asked to sign in with a Google account, which is necessary for going on the Play Store, and using other Google services. Tap Create a new account if you don't have one, or type your Gmail address and tap next.

Type your password and tap Next.

Tap to Accept the Terms of Service.

Your Google account can back up your handset, track your location so you get better searches, and send errors to help Android improve. Untick any service you don't want, using the down arrow. Tap Next.

Set up your payment details if you like, if you want to buy apps in the future. Choose your payment method, or tap No, thanks, then tap Next.

14.

If you've used Android before, you can restore the data from a backup. Tap backup to see the list of backups, and tap the one you want to restore, then tap Done.

You can also tap Set up as new device, then tap Next.

You'll be asked to set up a screen lock, but as we cover this later on, tap Skip for now.

Tap Skip anyway to confirm.

18.

Give your phone a name, then tick or untick the boxes to share your locations for better web searches. Tap Finish.

Touchscreen buttons

There are three buttons on the bottom of the phone, which are used to navigate the phone.

'Home' (middle button): This is a physical button which goes to the Home screen, and also acts as fingerprint scanner.
'Back' (triangle): Moves you back one screen.
'Recent apps' (square): Shows your recently used apps.

4. Connecting to the internet

Follow these steps to learn how to connect to the internet through Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Tap Apps (the grid of squares) from the Home screen. Tap Settings (the cog).

2.

Tap the Wi-Fi switch if it's off. Tap the Wi-Fi line.

3.

Tap your network name.

4.

Enter your Wi-Fi password and tap Connect.

You should be connected to your wireless network and a Wi-Fi symbol will appear at the top of the screen.

Turning mobile data on or off

1.

Go to Apps > Settings.

2.

To check the mobile data connection, you'll need to turn off Wi-Fi. Tap the Wi-Fi switch (remember to turn it back on after).

3.

You'll see a letter at the top, which means mobile data is on. If you don't, tap Mobile data.

5. Setting up new email accounts

These steps will help you set up email on your HTC 10. Your phone can manage emails from personal, work, and email accounts. If you have a work or education account, choose Exchange. Choose IMAP for all other accounts, or POP if you have an older account.

Go to Apps > Settings.

Tap Accounts & sync.

Choose between ExchangeIMAP or POP. Tap Mail to set up your account on the Mail app, or a red M option to send it to the Gmail app.

5.

Enter your email address and password, then tap Next.

6.

You'll see some options to choose how often the apps checks for email, and how to download attachments. Edit these if you like, then tap Next.

7.

Your account will show on the Accounts screen.

6. Setting up a lock screen

Go to Apps > Settings.

2.

Tap Security.

3.

Tap Screen lock.

4.

Choose your unlock type, from Pattern, PIN, or Password:

  • Pattern: Lets you draw a pattern on a grid of dots.
  • PIN: A 4-digit code.
  • Password: A code using numbers, letters, and symbols.

You can turn on your password before the phone starts up, protecting it if it's been lost or stolen. Tap require to unlock this, or tap No thanks and tap Continue.

6.

Enter your Pattern, PIN, or Password twice.

7.

You can choose which notifications are shown when the phone is locked. Tap Show all notification content to see all notifications and content, Hide sensitive content to see notifications but not the content, and Don't show notifications. Tap Next.

Tap Automatically lock phone to choose how long your phone needs a password after it times out.

Go to Settings, then scroll down and tap Fingerprint scanner.

2.

Tap Add fingerprint.

3.

Follow the instructions to scan your fingerprint.  

4.

Lift and replace your finger when asked.

When your fingerprint has been scanned, you'll see a screen telling you it's done. You can Add another fingerprint or tap Done to save your print.

6.

Tap your print to rename it, or delete it.

7.

Tap Reset fingerprint scanner to remove all registered fingerprints. You'll have to confirm this action.
