Kit Guide: HP Elite x3 - setting it up

In this guide we'll take you through setting up your HP Elite x3, from inserting the SIM card to keeping your information safe with a lock screen.

1. Box contents

Here's what you should find in the box:

  • 1 x HP Elite x3
  • 1 x USB C cable
  • 1 x USB-C Mains power adaptor
  • 1 x information pack
  • 1 x in-line earphones

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

Before you use your phone you'll need to insert the SIM card, and also a memory card if you want to add more storage space. These go in a tray in the left-hand edge of the phone.

Use your fingernail to release the tray and remove it from the phone.

2.

Put the NanoSIM into the inner holder (marked 1) with the contacts facing down and the cut-off corner nearest the end of the tray.

3.

If you're adding a memory card, put this into the outer holder (marked 2) with the contacts facing down and the narrow end nearest the SIM card.

4.

Slide the tray back into the slot.

With the SIM and memory cards in place, you're ready to set the phone up.

 

3. Completing the Elite x3 Setup Wizard

When you turn on the x3 for the first time, you'll see the 'Setup Wizard' which helps you get the phone ready to use.

A SIM service message might pop-up while you're doing the Setup. If it does, pick your mobile network from the list, the message will close and take you right back to where you were.

Press and hold the power button on the right-hand edge of the phone for a few seconds to turn it on.

Choose the language you want to use on the phone, then tap Next.

Choose the country you're in and tap Next.

4.

Read through the 'Licence terms', then tap Accept.

5.

Change the time and date settings if they're wrong, then tap Next.

Pick the Wi-Fi network you want to connect the phone to, or tap Skip to use your mobile network if you don't have a Wi-Fi network available.

7.

If you're connecting to Wi-Fi, type the password and tap Done. If you're not sure what the password is, you'll usually find it on a sticker on your router.

If all went well the Elite x3 will show that it's connected to the Wi-Fi network. Tap Next.

9.

Tap Express to turn on the features listed below automatically, or tap Customise to change any of them:

  • Mobile data, Find My Phone, Error and diagnostic reporting, and Advertising ID.
  • Location services.
  • Website Protection.
  • Personalised speech and typing.
  • Automatically connecting to open Wi-Fi hotspots.
  • Skype access to your address book.

To sign in with a Microsoft account - used to download apps and back the phone up - tap Sign in. To set up a free Microsoft account tap Create account, or if you don't want to use one tap Sign in later.

If you're signing in, type in your Microsoft account email address and password and tap Next.

To use OneDrive to store your photos and videos online, tap Next. To continue without this, tap Not now.

13.

Cortana is a personal digital assistant that can be activated on your phone. Tap Use Cortana to turn this feature on, or tap Not now to skip this for now.

The Elite x3 will take a few minutes to configure some pre-installed apps. When it's completed, tap Next.

15.

Your phone will ask permission to read your Microsoft account information. Tap Yes to agree, or tap No to skip this.

Tap Done to close the wizard.

That's the Setup Wizard finished.

 

Touchscreen buttons

 

Below the screen is a black menu bar with three touch buttons to help you get around the phone:

'Home' (Windows icon): touching this brings you back to the Home screen from any screen or app.

'Back' (left arrow): takes you back one screen in menus and apps.

'Search' (magnifying glass): lets you search your phone and the internet.

4. Connecting to the Internet

Your phone works best when it's connected to the internet, so we've written this section of the guide to help you get online using either Wi-Fi or mobile data.

Swipe right-to-left to open the apps list, scroll down and tap Settings.

In the settings menu, tap Network & wireless then tap Wi-Fi.

Make sure the Wi-Fi switch is On.

Tap the wireless network you want to connect to.

5.

Type the password for the network. If you're not sure what it is, take a look at the router - you'll usually find it there.

6.

The phone will show you when it's connected to the Wi-Fi network.

Turning mobile data on or off

 

When you insert your nano-SIM and turn your Elite x3 on for the first time, it will attempt to set up your mobile data connection automatically. There will be a mobile data indicator (G, E, H, 3G or 4G) next to the signal bars at the top-left corner of the screen when you have a mobile data connection.

From your Home screen, open the Settings menu.

2.

Tap on Network & Wireless, then Mobile & SIM.

3.

Make sure the Data connection switch is On. Tap to turn it on if you need to.

If you still can't get online, tap SIM settings.

5.

Tap Search for networks, and pick your network from the list.

6.

5. Setting up new email accounts

Adding your email accounts to the Elite x3 will let you read and send messages wherever you are.

Swipe across the Home screen to see your apps, then scroll down and tap Settings.

Tap Accounts, then tap Email and app accounts.

Tap Add an account.

Choose what type of account you're adding. If you're not sure which one to pick, tap Other account.

6.

Type your email address and password into the boxes. Check the password by tapping the eye on the right of the box, then tap Sign in.

7.

Type your name (it will show on email you send) then tap Sign in.

8.

Tap Done to finish the account setup.

Your email can be accessed through the Outlook app on the Home screen.

6. Setting up a lock screen

Locking your phone's screen will protect your pictures and messages, and keep your accounts safe. We'll show you how to set this up, and also explain how to use your fingerprint to unlock your Elite x3.

Swipe across the Home screen to open the Apps list, then tap Settings.

2.

Tap Personalisation followed by Lock screen.

3.

Scroll to the bottom, and tap Sign-in options.

4.

Tap Add to create a PIN to protect your phone.

If you have a Microsoft account on the phone, type your password then tap save.

6.

Type the PIN you'd like to set into the first box.

7.

Type it again in the second box (if they don't match you'll be asked to do it again) then tap OK.

Your phone is now protected by the PIN. Choose how long the phone will wait before it locks automatically by tapping the 'Require sign-in' drop down menu.

 

Setting up fingerprint unlocking

 

If you've added a PIN to secure your phone, you can use your fingerprint to unlock it instead of typing in your PIN each time.

Follow steps 1-3 above to see the Sign-in options, then tap Set up in the fingerprint section.

2.

Tap Get started on the Windows Hello screen to continue.

3.

The fingerprint sensor is located on the back of the phone, below the camera lens. Touch and lift your finger from the sensor (following the prompts onscreen) until the phone stores your print.

4.

Once complete, you can add more fingerprints or tap the Close button to exit the fingerprint setup.

Now that your fingerprint is stored, you can use it to unlock your phone and also download apps from the Windows Store.
