Kit guide - BlackBerry KEYone - setting it up

Before you can start using your KEYone, there are a few things you'll need to do. This guide will walk you through what you need to know, from what's in the box, to finishing up with a lock screen.

1. Box contents

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

The first thing you'll need to do is insert the SIM card, and we'll also show you where the MicroSD card goes (if you have one).

Inserting the SIM card

1.

The SIM card goes into a tray that pops out of the right-hand edge of the phone. Push the SIM tool into the small hole at the top of the tray until it pops out.

2.

The SIM card goes into the slot closest to the phone, with the metal contacts facing down.

3.

When the SIM card's in place, push the tray back into the phone.

Inserting the MicroSD card

1.

The memory card goes into the same tray as the SIM card. Push the SIM tool into the small hole to release the tray, and carefully pull it out.

2.

The MicroSD card goes into the slot furthest from the phone, with the metal contacts facing down.

3.

Push the tray back into the phone, making sure it's securely in place.

3. Completing the KEYone Setup Wizard

Before you can get started using your phone, you'll need to go through the Setup Wizard. There are quite a few steps, but don't worry, we'll walk you through everything.

Choose your Language and tap Next.

2.

If you want to copy your information from another smartphone, tap Copy your data. To set up as a new phone, tap Set up as new.

3.

Choose the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. You can skip this if you want by tapping Use mobile network for setup, but we wouldn't recommend it, because your phone will need to download updates, and it's always better to use Wi-Fi.

Type the Password for your network (if you're not sure what it is, it should be printed on your router). Tap Connect.

If you already have a Google account, type your Gmail address, and tap Next. If you don't have a Google account, tap More options > Create new account. Without a Google account, you won't be able to download apps and games from the Play Store.

Type your Password, and tap Next.

7.

You'll need to agree to the 'Terms of Service', and 'Privacy Policy'. You can read these if you want by tapping the links, then tap I Agree.

You'll be asked about unlocking your phone with a fingerprint, but we cover that in more detail in a later chapter, so we'd recommend tapping Skip to come back to it.

If you chose to skip adding a fingerprint, you'll need to tap Skip anyway to confirm.

10.

Choose which Google services you want to use by tapping the switches to turn them on or off.

Tap Next when you've chosen which services you want to use.

The Google app can help with things like location services, and improving web browsing. Scroll to the bottom of the screen, and tap Yes, I'm in to use the Google app, or No, thanks if you'd rather not.

You can set up a few additional things from here if you want, like 'On-body detection', or using your voice to search. If there's nothing else you want to set up, just tap All set.

You'll need to agree to the 'End user licence agreement', you can read the full agreement by tapping the link, then tap I Agree, then Next.

You can read the 'Privacy Policy, 'Warranty Information', and 'Safety Information' by tapping the links, then tap Ok.

You'll be asked to send 'usage data' to BlackBerry to help them improve their services. Untick the boxes if you don't want to send this information, then tap Next.

You can sign up to 'BlackBerry Insider', which will send you information about products and services. Enter your email address if you want to sign up, or tap Skip if you don't want to receive emails from BlackBerry.

BlackBerry would like to collect diagnostic and usage data to help them improve their products. You can opt out if you want, by tapping No thanks, or tap Ok to agree, then tap Next.

You'll see the 'Setup is complete!' screen. Tap Finish and you'll see a short demonstration of how your Home screen works.

Tap Next to skip through each screen, then tap Ok.

Touchscreen buttons

 

'Home' (circle): pressing this returns you to the Home screen from any screen or app.

'Back' (triangle): takes you back one screen.

'Menu' (square): displays  apps you've used.

 

4. Connecting to the Internet

Your BlackBerry KEYone needs the internet to use most of its main features, and you can connect using Wi-Fi, or mobile data. Here's how to do both.

Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick settings panel. Tap the cog icon.

2.

Tap Wi-Fi and check that the switch is on the 'On' position, and tap the name of your network.

3.

Type your Password (it's usually printed on your router if you're not sure what it is). Tap Connect.

Turning mobile data on or off

From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Data usage.

2.

Tap the Mobile data switch to turn it on or off.

5. Setting up new email accounts

Your KEYone can look after lots of different types of email accounts. You probably added a Gmail account when you set the phone up, but here's how to add more.

From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Accounts > Add account.

2.

If your account is supplied by your employer or an education provider, you'll need to choose Exchange, otherwise tap Personal (IMAP).

Type your email address, and tap Next.

Type your password, and tap Sign in.

5.

You can chose to turn some settings on or off by ticking the boxes. When you've made your choices, tap Next.

6.

Add a name for your account if you want, then type Your name (this will show on any emails you send). Then tap Next to finish adding your account.

6. Setting up a lock screen

We always recommend protecting your phone with a lock screen, so if you didn't do it as part of the initial setup, follow the steps below to add one.

From your Home screen, go to SettingsSecurity > Screen Lock.

2.

Choose which unlock method you'd like to use, Pattern, PIN, or Password.

3.

Choose whether you want your phone to ask for your code when you turn it on. If you pick this option and forget your code, you won't be able to turn your phone on at all. If you're not sure, we'd recommend tapping No, thanks.

Enter your code, and tap Continue.

5.

Type your code again to confirm, tap Ok.

6.

Choose whether you want to Show all notification contentHide sensitive notification content, or Don't show notifications at all.

Tap Done to finish adding your lock screen.

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Security > Fingerprint.

2.

Tap Continue, then enter your PIN.

3.

Follow the instructions to register your fingerprint.

4.

When you get to the 'Fingerprint added!' page, tap Done.
