Before you get going with your Archos phone, there are a few things you'll need to do. This guide will walk you through the initial Setup and get you up and running.
Here's what you'll find in the box:
Before you turn your phone on, you'll need to insert the SIM card. You can use two SIM cards with the 50 Titanium, which is handy if you have a work number and a separate personal number. If you want to increase the storage capacity, you can also add a MicroSD card.
The SIM, and memory cards go behind the back cover, so you'll need to remove this first. Using your thumbnail in the notch near the bottom of the phone, carefully prise the cover away. If the battery is in the phone, you'll need to remove this too.
The SIM slots are marked 'SIM1' and 'SIM2', if you're only using one sim card, make sure it goes into the slot marked 'SIM1'. Push it into the slot with the metal contacts facing down.
If you want to use a MicroSD card this goes into a slot to the right of the camera lens. Push the memory card into the slot with the narrow end first and the metal contacts facing down.
Put the battery back into the phone, and replace the back cover, making sure it's securely clipped back onto the phone.
The Setup Wizard is a series of steps that help you get your phone ready to use. There are quite a few steps, but don't worry, we'll walk you through them and explain anything that might not make sense.
The first thing you'll see is the Welcome screen. Pick your language, and tap the arrow.
Tap the name of your Wi-Fi network.
Type the Password for your network, and tap Connect.
Type your Gmail address to sign in to your Google account. If you don't have one, get one for free by tapping Or create a new account.
Enter your password, and tap Next.
You can add a payment method if you want, by tapping the one you want to use, then Continue. If you don't want to add payment information, tap No, thanks, then Continue. There are lots of free apps and games available from the Play Store, so a payment method isn't essential.
You can set a screen lock now if you want, but we cover this in a later chapter, so we recommend tapping Skip to come back to it later.
Choose which 'Google services' you want to use by ticking or unticking the boxes, then tap Next.
'Google Now' is Google's personal assistant, and lets you search and send messages with your voice. Start using Google now by tapping Yes, I'm in, or tap Skip if you'd rather not use it.
You'll be asked if you want to install some 'Third party applications'. Tap Install, or tap Next to skip.
Choose whether you want Google to check your phone's activity for security problems. Tap Decline if you don't want this to happen, or tap Accept.
Tap Got it to finish the Setup Wizard.
It's always useful to know how to connect to the internet, and how to turn mobile data, and Wi-Fi on and off. Here's how it's done.
Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the cog icon to open the Settings menu.
Tap the switch to turn Wi-Fi on, then tap on the name of your network.
Enter the network password, and tap Connect.
To turn mobile data on or off, go to Setting > Data usage.
Tap the Mobile data switch.
If your phone didn't connect to the internet and you need some more help, this guide to APN settings should help.
You might have already added a Gmail account when you did the initial Setup, but if you didn't, or you want to add more accounts, here's how.
From your Home screen, go to Settings > Accounts > Add account.
Choose the type of account you want to add.
Type your email address.
Enter the password for your account.
You can choose some of the settings for your account - like how often you want the phone to check for new messages. Just tap the tickboxes, then tap Next.
Type a name for your account, then enter your name (this will be shown on any emails you send from this account).
Tap Next to finish setting up your email account.
If your account didn't set up properly, we've written a detailed guide to email server settings to help out.
We always recommend adding a lock screen to your phone - it helps to protect any information that's stored on it.
From your Home screen, go to Settings > Security > Screen lock.
Choose which type of lock you'd like to add.
Type your code, and tap Continue.
Type it in again to confirm, and tap Ok.
Choose whether you want to 'Show all notification content', Hide sensitive notification content', or 'Don't show notifications at all'.
Tap Done to finish setting your screen lock.
