1. Box contents

When you open the box, you'll find these things inside:

  • Alcatel Shine Lite
  • Mains power adapter
  • USB C lead
  • In-line earphones
  • Information pack
  • SIM removal tool

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

The first thing to do is put the SIM card. If you're going to use an SD memory card to increase the phone's storage, have it ready, as it goes in the same place as the SIM.

Insert SIM

Remove the SIM removal tool from back of the information pack.

Insert it into the hole on the right-hand side of the phone. Push it until the SIM tray pops out.

Place the SIM into the larger slot, with the cut corner facing the phone and metal contacts facing down.

If you have one, put the microSD card into the other slot with the contacts facing down.

Slide the tray back in and push it until the side is flush with the phone.

There's no more assembly to do, so when you're ready, hold the Power button on the left-hand side to turn it on.

3. Completing the Shine Lite Setup Wizard

The first time the phone turns on, it takes you through the 'Setup Wizard'. We cover each step below and explain anything that might not make sense along the way.

At any point during the Setup a pop-up might appear asking you to choose your service provider from a list. If it does, just tap it and press OK to move on. If it doesn't, don't worry, the phone will have sorted it out itself.

Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. You can skip this if you like, but you'll use some of your mobile data to download updates, so use Wi-Fi if you can.

Type the password and press Connect. The password can usually be found on a sticker on the router.

If you want to transfer data and settings from an old Android phone, tap Copy Google... If not, press No, thanks. Press Next to continue.

Log into your Google account if you have one. If you don't, press Create a new account. You need a Google account to download apps and use a lot of the phone's features, so it's well worth doing.

Accept the Terms of Service and requirements. You can read any of the documents by tapping the links.

Choose any of the Google services you want to use: 'Backup...' saves your settings, apps, and contacts to your Google account to make setting up a new phone faster. 'Help improve Google...' sends anonymous data to Google to help them make updates and new features. Press Next to move on.

Choose a payment type to add to your Google account. This makes paying for apps and media faster, as you don't need to put your bank details in every time you buy something. If you don't want to add one, tap No, thanks and Continue to move on.

If the time and date are right, press Next to continue. If they're not, just tap on them and add the right info.

If you're happy setting up a lock screen, choose the type you want and follow the instructions. Like before, we cover this in more detail later on, so if you're not sure, press Skip.

Any old phones related to your Google account will show in a list. You can restore your apps and settings from your old phone by tapping its name. To start fresh, choose Don't restore.

Watch a demo of the phone's 'launcher' and press Next.

  • 'Menu' (right): shows a list of apps you've used before.

4. Connecting to the Internet

While you probably connected the Shine Lite to Wi-Fi during the Setup Wizard, you'll need to connect to others sooner or later. These steps show you how:

You can quickly see whether you're online using Wi-Fi or mobile internet by looking at the icon in the bar at the very top of the screen.

5. Setting up new email accounts

You set up Gmail account earier, but you probably have other email accounts to add. These steps work for Hotmail, Yahoo, Outlook, and most other personal and business accounts.

Rename the account if you like and press Next.

Enter your name - this appears on your emails when people get them. Hit Done to finish setting up your account.

Some older or specialist email accounts can't be set up using the steps above. If you're having problems, our detailed guide to email server settings will help you out.

6. Setting up the fingerprint scanner

We always recommend keeping your phone safe with a lock screen. Without one, anyone that gets your phone can view your pictures, messages, and account details. Helpfully, the Alcatel Shine has a fingerprint scanner, that's more secure than a normal PIN and faster to unlock.
