How to factory reset your Samsung Galaxy Core Prime

squiggleboldXL

A factory reset (or 'hard reset') wipes all your stuff from your Core Prime, which can be useful if you're selling it or trading it in. It'll also help you get back into your phone if you're locked out of it.

Back up your stuff before you reset

You should always back up your stuff before you factory reset your phone so you don't lose it. If you've got a Google account on it, things like settings and contacts will probably already be safe. Check in Settings > Accounts > Google to see if the account's there, and what's being backed up online ('syncing').

If you want to save your pictures, videos and music, you'll need to back your phone up to your computer. Download Samsung's Smart Switch software and follow the instructions in our guide to backing up your smartphone to your computer.

If your Core Prime's frozen or crashed

If the phone doesn't react to touches on the screen, the operating system might have crashed. A reboot, or 'soft' reset, will often fix the problem.

1.

Take the back cover off your phone.

2.

Take out the battery.

3.

Wait 10 seconds, then put the battery back in.

4.

Put the cover back on and hold the power button in for a few seconds to restart the phone.

If it's working properly

If you just want to wipe it to sell or trade it in, reset the phone through the Settings menu:

1.

Tap Apps > Settings > Backup and reset.

2.

Tap Factory data reset.

3.

Tap Reset device.

4.

Tap Erase everything.

The phone will reset, and when it restarts the 'Setup Wizard' will start, just like it's a new phone. If you're not using it again, hold the power button in for a few seconds to turn the Core Prime off.

If it comes on but doesn't work

You can wipe your phone and reinstall the latest version of Android (the phone's operating system) using a computer. You'll need a Windows PC with internet access, and a USB cable to connect your phone.

Before you start, download Samsung's Smart Switch software and install it on your computer.

1.

Open Smart Switch on the computer, then connect the phone.

2.

When you see your phone appear, click More.

3.

On the menu bar at the top, click Tools.

4.

Click Emergency Software Recovery and Initialisation.

5.

You'll see a pop-up window showing the new software version, and a warning that you'll lose all your stuff. Click OK to carry on.

6.

When the software has been downloaded and installed, close Smart Switch and unplug your phone.

If all went well, the phone will show the 'Setup Wizard' ready for you to use it again, or turn it off if you're getting rid of it.

If you're locked out of the phone

If you can't get into the phone or can't open the Settings menu, these steps will help you reset your Core Prime using Android's Recovery menu. You'll need to put your Google account details back in when it restarts.

1.

Turn the phone off, take the back cover off and remove the battery.

2.

Wait 10 seconds, then put the battery back in.

3.

Hold in the Home and Volume up buttons.

4.

Now press and hold the Power button at the same time. Keep them all pressed for 5-10 seconds.

5.

You'll see the Recovery menu appear. It can be a bit tricky to hold all the buttons at the same time, so if the phone starts normally, you might have to try again.

6.

Use the Volume buttons to move the highlight to wipe data/factory reset then press the Power button.

7.

Move the highlight to Yes - delete all user data and press the Power button to reset your phone.

8.

When the reset finishes, reboot system now will be highlighted. Press the Power button to restart the phone, and put the back cover on.

When the phone restarts, it'll be just like it came out of the box, ready for you to go through the 'Setup Wizard'. If you're not going to use it again, turn it off with the Power button.

If your Core Prime's been lost or stolen

If you find your phone's missing, find it or wipe it remotely with Android Device Manager (ADM). You'll need to log into your Google account to do it, and it'll only work if your phone's still turned on and connected to the internet.

1.

Go to the Android Device Manager website and log in with your Google account.

2.

If your phone's still turned on, you'll see its location on a map. If that's where you are, click Ring to play the ringtone at full volume, even if the phone's on silent.

3.

To wipe it, click Erase.

4.

Confirm you want to wipe the device by clicking Erase again.

Even if it isn't on right now, ADM will still send the command, and as soon as your phone reconnects to the internet it will reset.

That's your Core Prime reset, but if you need more help, you can get in touch with a Team Knowhow Expert here.
