Motorola Moto G5 Plus - using it

In this guide, we'll go through how to do some of the essentials of your phone, such as making calls, sending texts or setting alarms.

1. Making phone calls

Most smartphones have a slightly different way of making calls, so here's the steps to doing it on your G5.

Open the Phone app from the Home screen.

2.

When it opens, you'll have these options:

  • Favourites: shows you your favourite contacts so you can quickly call them.
  • History: shows recently made, received or missed calls.
  • Contacts: shows all the numbers saved to your phone.
  • Dialler: gives you a keypad so you can dial in a number.
3.

When you have a number onscreen, tap the green phone icon to call them.

2. Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)

Open Messenger from the Home screen.

2.

Tap the new message button in the bottom-right.

3.

Tap the To box, and type a person's number, or name if they're saved in your contacts. Suggestions might show as your type - tap one to choose them.

4.

Tap Enter message, then type your message.

5.

Tap the Send arrow on the right to send the message on its way.

Sending attachments & multimedia messages (MMS)

Follow steps 1-4 above to get your message ready, then go through these to add a picture or other attachment.

Tap the + button on the left of the message box.

2.

Use the icons along the bottom to choose the type of thing you want to send - an emoticon, a picture, video etc.

3.

Go through the phone to find the item you want to send, and tap it.

4.

With it attached, tap the Send arrow to get it sent.

Deleting a message thread

A 'message thread' is all the messages sent between you and a contact. To delete one:

1.

Open the Messenger app.

2.

Press and hold the thread you want to delete, until a tick shows next to it.

3.

Tap the bin icon at the top to delete it.

3. Sending emails

Open the Gmail app from your Home screen.

2.

Tap the compose button in the bottom-right corner of the screen.

3.

Tap into the To box, and start to type a person's email address or name. Some suggestions from your contacts might show up as you type - tap one to choose them.

4.

Type a Subject for your email.

5.

Type your email into the box at the bottom.

6.

Tap the arrow at the top-right to send the email.

Adding an attachment

Go through steps 1-5 above to get your email ready, then follow these steps to add an attachment.

Tap the paperclip icon in the top-right corner, then tap Attach file.

2.

Go through the phone to find the item you want to send, and tap it.

3.

With it attached, tap the arrow in the top-right to send the email on its way.

4. Setting alarms

You can easily add alarms that can make sure you're up and about at just the right time.

Open the Clock app from the Home screen.

2.

Tap the Alarm icon in the top-left.

3.

Tap the button at the bottom.

4.

Tap the hour you want the alarm to go off, then tap the minute.

5.

Tap OK.

The alarm is ready, and it'll go off at the time you've set. You can adjust some of the other options too.

 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

Repeat: choose the days you want the alarm to go off.

Ringtone: choose a sound the alarm will make.

Vibrate: choose if you want the phone to vibrate when the alarm goes off.

Label: give the alarm a name, like 'Work' or 'Doctor's appointment'.

You can use the switch on the right of an alarm to turn it off if you don't need it to go off.

5. Tips

Now that you know how to use some of the basic features of your phone, here are some tips to help you get a bit more from it.

OK Google

OK Google is a voice assistant that lets you talk to your phone to get things done.
When you're on the Home screen, say "OK Google", and your phone will start listening to you. You can then ask your phone to find information or perform tasks, like:

  • Reply to a message
  • Create a calendar event
  • Search for sports scores
  • Get directions

Moto Assist

Moto Assist is another digital assistant, which can manage some features of your phone for you. It can use the time, date, your calendar, and location to change settings on your phone - like automatically going into silent mode at night.

  1. Open Moto Assist from the Home screen.
  2. Read the welcome message, then tap the arrow.
  3. Read through some more intro information, and press Next.
  4. To use Moto Assist, tap Yes, I'm in.
  5. You'll need to agree to some data collection policies - tap Yes I'm in to allow it.
  6. Tap OK to link Moto Assist to your Google account.
  7. Read through some of the tips for using Moto Assist, and tap Got it.
