This super-helpful guide will help you set up a Microsoft Lumia 950 XL. We go through everything, from putting the SIM card in, to securing it with a lock screen.
This list shows what you'll get in the box:
To put the SIM card into the phone, you'll need to remove the back cover. On the bottom edge, near the charging port, you'll see a notch in the plastic. Put your fingernail in there and ease the back cover away from the phone. You'll also need to take out the battery if it's inside.
The slot for the SIM card is at the bottom of the battery compartment and has a picture labelled 'nano SIM'. Slide the SIM into the slot with the cut off corner going in first. You'll need to make sure that the gold contacts are facing downwards and into the phone.
If you have a memory card to put in as well, it goes into the slot with the metal housing on the right. It's got a picture labelled 'microSD'. Slide the thinner edge in first, again with the gold contacts facing down.
To use the Lumia 950 XL for the first time, or after it's been factory reset, you'll need to go through the 'Setup Wizard' (some steps that help the phone get ready for you to use it). We go through it step-by-step below.
While you're completing the Setup Wizard, you might see a box appear that asks you to pick your mobile network. Just tap yours in the list, and the Setup Wizard will carry on.
Turn the phone on by pressing and holding the power button on the right-hand side of the phone. You can let go when you feel it vibrate, and it'll turn on.
The first screen asks you to choose a language. 'English (United Kingdom)' should already be chosen, but you can scroll through and choose a different one if you want. Press Next when you've picked.
Choose your 'Home country'. It'll be matched with the language you chose, but you can change it if you need to, and then press Next.
You have to agree to the Terms and Conditions', so read through them if you'd like to, and then press Accept.
Choose a time zone by tapping the box and picking from the list, and then set the time and date. Press Next when you're done.
Now you can connect to WiFi. You can skip this step, but we don't think you should because the phone needs to download some apps, and could use up a lot of mobile data. Press the name of your WiFi network and then type the password in when the box appears (it's on a sticker on your router). Press Done to connect.
If it's worked, you'll see your network name under 'Connected to'. Press Next.
This screen helps you to do some of the settings quickly. Read through the options, and press Customise if you want to change anything. Press Express when you're done.
This screen lets you sync your information. If you've got a Microsoft account that you've used on another phone, press Sign in. If you don't, we recommend pressing Create one and following the instructions onscreen. You can also press Sign in later, but you won't be able to download apps until you've done it.
Type your Microsoft email address and password into the boxes and then press Next.
Here you'll be able to restore any information you've got backed up, so choose a file and then press Next.
You can use OneDrive to store all your pictures and videos. If you want to use it, press Next, or if you don't, press Not now.
Next is the option to use 'Cortana'. It's a personal voice assistant that can help you do lots of things in the phone. Read through the information, and if you want to use it, press Use Cortana. If it's not for you, press Not now.
The phone will download the apps it needs. When it's finished, press Next.
The phone should now be set up and ready for you to use. Just press Done and you'll go to your 'Home screen'.
Under the main screen are some touch buttons that help you get around the phone. Here's what they are and what they do:
'Home' (Windows icon): get back to the Home screen from anywhere in the phone.
'Back' (left arrow): go back one screen.
'Search' (magnifying glass): search for specific apps or files.
Lots of our apps and games use the internet to work properly, so here's some steps to help you get connected.
To connect to WiFi, you'll need to have the wireless password. If you don't know what it is, it'll be on a sticker on your router.
While on the Home screen, swipe down from the top, and then press All settings in the top-right corner.
From the list, press Network & Wireless > WiFi.
Make sure it's turned on, and then press the name of your WiFi network.
Type the password in the box that appears and then press Done.
If it's worked, your Wi-Fi network will be showing under 'Connected to'.
When you're using Wi-Fi, it's good to turn your mobile data off so that you don't have it running in the background, using up your mobile data. Here's how to turn it on and off.
Go to Settings > Mobile & SIM.
Tap the switch under data connection to turn it on or off.
That's all there is to turning mobile data on and off. If you're having problems connecting to mobile data, have a look at our guide for connecting manually here.

Swipe down from the top of the Home screen and press All settings.
In the list, tap Accounts > Your email and accounts.
To set up a new account, press Add an account.
Choose the type of account. If it's a work or education account, you'll need to choose 'Exchange'.
Type in your email address and then press Next.
Type in the password for the email account, and then press Sign in.
Read through the Terms and Conditions of using the account on your phone and then press Allow.
Type in your name so it can be added to the emails you send, and then press Sign in.
If you're having any problems adding your email account, have a look at our guide to email server settings for help setting it up manually.
Protecting your phone with a lock screen is recommended because without one, anyone who picks up your phone will be able to use it and see all your personal information. Follow our steps to set one up.
Swipe down from the top of the Home screen and press All settings.
Tap Personalisation > Lock screen.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and then press Sign-in options.
Under 'PIN', tap Add to set one up.
To make sure it's you, you'll have to type in your Microsoft account email address and password. Tap Save when you've done it.
Type in the PIN you want to set, and then type it in again to confirm it. Press OK when it's done.
The lock screen is now set up. Press the Home button and go back to the Home screen.
You Lumia 950 XL should be set up and ready for you to start using it now.
