2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

These steps will show you how to put the SIM and microSD (memory) cards into your phone.

 
 
 
 
Inserting the SIM into Microsoft Lumia 640 XL

1.

Use your thumbs on the coloured corners on the back to push away the back cover. Remove the battery.

2.

Put the SIM card in the slot on the left-hand edge of the battery compartment. Make sure the gold contacts are facing down, and the cut-off corner is pushed in first. If you have a second SIM, this goes into the 'SIM2' slot.

3.

If you have a memory card, put this in the slot near the camera lens. Make sure the narrow end is pushed in first, with the gold contacts facing down.

4.

Replace the battery and back cover.

3. Completing the Lumia 640 XL Setup Wizard

When you turn on the 640 XL, you'll see the 'Setup Wizard', which helps get your phone ready for use.

Setting it up

At any point in the Setup, you might see a pop-up asking you to pick your mobile network. Tap the network name then tap OK.

Tap to choose your language, then tap next.

Read and accept the 'Terms of Use' and 'Privacy Statement'.

3.

Tap your network name to use Wi-Fi, which we recommend, as the phone will use mobile data to download updates.

4.

Type the wireless password, which you can find on a sticker on your router. Tap Show password if you want to check your typing, then tap done.

If successful, you'll see a Wi-Fi symbol (fan) at the top. Tap next.

6.

You'll be asked to use 'Wi-Fi Sense', which lets you manage your phone's internet connection using Wi-Fi, and lets you share Wi-Fi with your contacts if they run Window 8.1 or later. Untick the ones you don't want, then tap next.

7.

Tap recommended if you want to set up your phone quickly, using the default settings for updates, app downloads, etc. Tap custom if you want to change individual settings.

Tap to change the country and region settings if you're outside the UK. These include the time zone, time, and date. Tap the tick to save.

You'll be asked to use a Microsoft account, which is needed to download apps from the 'Windows Store' and back up your data. If you have a 'hotmail.com', 'live.com', or 'outlook.com', or their 'co.uk' version, tap sign in. If you don't, tap create one and complete the form.

11.

Enter your email address and password, then tap next.

12.

You'll be asked to use your account to back up your phone. It can upload your photos to OneDrive (Microsoft's online storage service), and back up settings and texts. Tap yes, or not now to skip.

Cortana is the Windows digital assistant. To use it, tap sure, or not now, thanks (you can turn it on later). Tap next twice.

14.

The final screen asks you to send feedback data to improve Windows. Tap next

The Setup is complete and you'll be on the Home screen.

Touchscreen buttons

The three buttons at the bottom are used to navigate the phone.

Back (left arrow): Takes you back one screen.

Start (Windows): Takes you to the Start (home screen).

Search (magnifying glass): Hold to speak to Cortana. 

4. Connecting to the Internet

Swipe right-to-left on the Home screen to open Apps.

Scroll down and tap Settings

3.

Tap Wi-Fi.

4.

Make sure the Wi-Fi switch is on, then tap your wireless network name.

5.

Type your password. You can check your typing by tapping the 'Show password' box, then tap Done.

6.

You'll see your network name listed, and a Wi-Fi symbol at the top of the screen.

Go to Apps > Settings.

2.

Tap Wi-Fi, as we need to turn this off to connect to mobile internet. Tap the switch, then tap the back arrow

Tap mobile+SIM.

If you're still not connected, tap Sim settings.

6.

If the network shown isn't the correct one, tap the mobile connection profile and choose the correct one.

5. Setting up new email accounts

These steps will help you add an email account. If you have an address ending in 'hotmail.com', 'live.com', or 'outlook.com', or their 'co.uk' version, this is a Microsoft email. You can create one for free if you don't have one. You can also add other accounts.

From the Start screen, slide right-to-left to open Apps.

Scroll down and tap Settings.

Tap email+accounts.

Tap your account type. If you're adding an education or work address, tap Exchange. If you're adding a personal account, or you're not sure what account you have, tap other account, and choose your email provider

Type your email address and password. Tap Show password to check your typing, then tap sign in.

If prompted, accept the 'terms of service'.

8.

You'll see the account listed, and you can add more accounts by tapping add account.

6. Setting up a lock screen

From the Start sreen, swipe across to Apps.

Scroll down and tap Settings.

Tap lock screen.

Enter your chosen password, then tap done. Type it again to confirm, and tap done again.

Choose when the screen times out and the phone needs a password by tapping your choice.
