Microsoft Lumia 535 - using it


This guide will will take you through some of the core features of your phone, and help you to familiarise yourself with it.

1. Making phone calls


Phone calls are managed using the 'Phone' app on your Lumia 535, you'll find this on your Home screen.

Tap the Phone app to open it.


You'll be taken to the 'call history' screen, from here you can use the icons at the bottom of the screen to move around the Phone app:

  • The left icon is the voicemail shortcut, tap this to check for messages.
  • The next one opens the number pad, letting you dial a number.
  • The third icon opens your phone book, where you'll see all of your contacts.
  • The last icon lets you search for a contact that's stored in your phone.

Whenever you have a contact displayed, just tap the call button to dial them.

2. Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)


You can send messages using the 'Messaging', and we'll also show you how to attach photos to a message.

Tap the Messaging app from your Home screen (it's a white speech bubble with a smiley face on it). If you have unread messages, you'll see a badge next to the icon showing you how many messages you have.


Tap the + button to write a new message.


Tap into the To box to pick the contact you want to send your message to.


To send your message, tap the white send icon.

Follow steps 1-3 above to get your message ready.


Tap the paperclip, then choose the type of file you want to attach.


Find and tap on the file you want to send, then tap the send icon at the bottom-right of the screen.

Deleting a message thread

A message thread is a series of messages sent between you and a contact. Your phone can store thousands of messages, but we do recommend deleting them every so often.


Tap and hold on the name of a contact.


When the menu appears, tap delete (you can also 'mute', or 'block' a contact from this menu).

3. Sending emails


To be able to send and receive emails, you'll need to have already added an account. If you haven't done this yet, our guide to getting your Lumia 535 set up will help you.

From your Home screen, tap the Outlook Mail app.


Tap the compose button (it's a '+' at the bottom of the email inbox screen).


Tap into the To line to pick a recipient for your email, you can choose from your contacts, or type an email address.


Type a subject into the subject line, and type your message by tapping into the blank message area.


Send your message by tapping the envelope icon.

Adding an attachment


Follow steps 1-4 above, then tap the paperclip icon.


Find and tap on the file you want to add. Add more files if you want, then tap the tick.


To send your message, tap the envelope icon.

4. Setting alarms


Setting alarms on your phone can be a really useful feature, we'll show you how in the steps below.

From the Home screen, go to AppsAlarms.


Tap the + button at the bottom of the page.


In the 'Time' box, set the alarm time by scrolling through the hours and minutes.


Tap the tick.


You can set the alarm to go off on multiple days by tapping the Repeat box.


Change other settings if you want, like the sound, or snooze time. When you're happy with the settings, tap Save.


You'll see your alarm in the menu and you can turn it on or off by tapping the Switch.

5. Tips


Now that you've familiarised yourself with some of the basic functions of your Lumia 535, here are some other things your phone can do, that you might find useful.

Using Cortana

Cortana is Microsoft's personal assistant and can help you with things like managing your appointments and reading your messages.

It also learns as you use it and can help by offering alternative travel routes, or letting you know about events in your area that you might be interested in.

To turn Cortana on go to the Apps list and tap Cortana.

Checking your data usage

The Lumia 535 has an app called 'Data Sense' which lets you monitor and manage your data usage over Wi-Fi or using your mobile data. It also lets you set limits on your data, to stop you going over your monthly allowance.

To open Data Sense, go to your Apps list and tap Data Sense.

Making stories from your photos

You can create stories from the photos stored in your phone using 'Lumia Storyteller'.

You can add captions, watch slideshows, and share them with friends on social media.

You can open Storyteller by tapping the Lumia Storyteller tile on the Home screen.
