Kit Guide: LG G6 - setting it up


In this guide, we'll go through the Setup of your LG G6. Getting a new phone can be complicated, so we've covered everything you’ll need to know get it started, from inserting the SIM card, to keeping it safe with a screen lock.

1. Box contents


Here's what you'll find in the box:

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards


Before getting started with the Setup of your G6, you'll need to get the SIM and memory cards in.

Push the SIM tool into the pinhole on the right-hand edge of the phone, until the SIM tray starts to pop out, and pull the tray out the rest of the way.


Put the NanoSIM onto the upper slot on the tray, with the cut-off corner facing away from the phone, and the metal contacts facing down.


If you're adding a MicroSD memory card, pop it on the lower slot on the tray.


Push the tray back inside the phone.

With both of those in, press and hold the power button on the back of the phone for a few seconds to turn it on and start the Setup.

3. Completing the G6 Setup Wizard


When you turn on the phone for the first time, it will show you the 'Setup Wizard', which is a series of steps that will help you get the phone ready to use.

On the Welcome screen, choose your language and then tap the arrow.


Make sure both switches are turned on at the top.


Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to, or tap Next to set up the phone without using Wi-Fi.


If you're connecting, type the password for the Wi-Fi, then press Connect. If it works, you'll see the word 'Connected' underneath your Wi-Fi network - tap Next.

If you've used an Android phone before, you can restore some data from it to your G6. In this guide, we'll be setting it up as a new phone, so tap Set up as new.


If you've got a Gmail account - which is needed to do things like downloading new apps - type it in and press Next. If you haven't, tap Or create a new account. Or if you don't want to use one for now, tap Skip.



Type in your password for your account, and tap Next.



You'll have to agree to Google's 'Terms of Service' and 'Privacy Policy' to sign in. Tap them to read them, then tap Accept.

Read through the available Google Services, such as automatic backup and using your phone's location for apps like maps and weather.


Keep the switches turned on for the ones you want to use, then tap Next.


Check that the date and time are right, and tap them if you need to change them. Once they're good, tap Next.


If you want to add a fingerprint to unlock the phone, tap Set up fingerprint, then tap Next. Or if you don't want to, tap No, thanks, then Next.

Before you can add your fingerprint, you'll need to set up a screen lock.


Choose the type you want to use.

  • Knock code: unlock the phone with a pattern of taps.
  • Pattern: draw a pattern across a grid of dots.
  • PIN: a code of numbers.
  • Password: a code that can be numbers or letters.

You can make the phone even more secure by requiring your screen lock when it turns on. Tap Require to turn on phone to use it, or tap No thanks. Press Next.


Draw, tap or type your screen lock, then tap Next.


Confirm it once more, than tap OK.

Confirm it once more, than tap OK.


To add your fingerprint, put your finger on the sensor on the back of the phone, then lift it when you feel a vibration. Repeat this a few times until the phone has a scan of your print.


Once your fingerprint is added, tap Next.


Read through the 'User Agreements' from LG, then tick the boxes to agree to them, and tap Done.

You've finished the Setup Wizard, and will now be on the Home screen.

The bottom row of icons is for some of the most used apps: Phone, Messages, Camera, Gallery and Chrome.

Touchscreen buttons


'Back' (triangle): takes you back a screen, or closes an app.

'Home' (circle): takes you back to the Home screen.

'Menu' (square): shows you any apps you've had open, and lets you swap between them.

4. Connecting to the internet


You'll need to get your LG G6 connected to the internet before you can start doing things like setting up your email, going on websites or downloading new apps or games.

You can use Wi-Fi or mobile data, and we'll go through both here.


Connecting the G6 to a Wi-Fi network

Swipe down from the top of the screen, and then tap the Cog icon in the top-right to open Settings.


Tap on Wi-Fi, and then check that it is turned on using the switch at the top.


Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to.


Type in the password for the Wi-Fi network, and then tap Connect.

If it works, you'll see the word 'Connected' under the Wi-Fi, and you should see the Wi-Fi signal bars at the top of the screen.

Turning mobile data on or off

Open Settings.


Make sure the switch next to 'Mobile data' is turned on. If it's not, tap it to turn it on.

If your phone is having any trouble connecting to the internet, you'll need to put in the 'APN settings' for your network.

5. Setting up new email accounts


Getting your email account set up will let you see all your emails, reply and send new ones, and your phone will let you know whenever new ones come in.

Open Settings from the Home screen.


Tap on General in the top-right.


Scroll down, and tap on Accounts & Sync.


Tap Add account in the bottom-right.


Choose the type of account you want to add. For work or school accounts, tap on Exchange, or for personal accounts tap on Email.


If you tapped on Email, tap Other.

Type in your email address and password, and press Next.



Give the phone a moment to download your email settings.


You might be given some account options, such as how often to check for new messages. Choose the options you want to use and then tap Next.


Give the account a name, and tap Done.

Your account is set up, and you can get to it by opening the Email app from the Home screen.

If you're phone has any problems downloading your settings, you might have to type in the settings manually. You can find the settings you'll need in our guide to email server settings.

6. Setting up a lock screen


Setting up the lock screen on your G6 will help to keep all your data, like photos and messages, safe and secure.

Open Settings from the Home screen.


Tap on Display at the top.


Tap Lock screen, then tap Select screen lock.


Choose the type you want to use:

  • Knock code: unlock the phone with a pattern of taps.
  • Pattern: draw a pattern across a grid of dots.
  • PIN: a code of numbers.
  • Password: a code that can be numbers or letters.
  • Fingerprints: use your fingerprint to unlock the phone (you'll have to set up one of the other unlock types first).

Type, draw or tap your screen lock, then tap Next.



Confirm it once more, then tap OK.



Choose which notifications you want to see on the Lock screen, and tap OK.



If you want to set up your fingerprints, tap Add, or tap Later to leave it.

Read the info about adding fingerprints, and then tap Next.


Confirm your screen lock code, then tap OK.


Put your finger on the sensor, and then lift it when you feel a vibration. Repeat this a few times until your phone has a full scan of your print.


Tap OK to finish setting up fingerprints, or Add more to add more fingerprints.

Your screen lock is set, so you can use your fingerprint or screen lock method to unlock the phone.
