Kit Guide: Huawei P9 - using it


This guide will help you get to grips with some of the core apps on your P9, like making calls, sending texts and emails, and setting alarms.

1. Making phone calls


With these short steps, find out how to make phone calls on the Huawei P9.

Tap the Phone icon on the Home screen to open the app. Enter a number using the keypad and tap the green button to make a call.


Use the letters on the keypad to spell a contact's name - matching contacts will show as you type. Tap a suggested contact to call them.


Swipe across from the dialler, or tap Contacts to see your contact list. Search the list using the box at the top.


Mark contacts you call frequently as favourites by tapping the star on their contact card. These will show in the Favourites tab as speed dials.

2. Sending texts & multimedia messages (MMS)


Tap the Messaging app icon on the Home screen, which is a white speech bubble on a blue background. You'll see a red badge in the corner if you have any unread messages.

Tap + New message at the bottom of the screen.


Tap in the To box, then type a mobile number or a contact's name. Matching contacts will appear below as you type, tap their name to select them.


Tap into the type message box to write your message. To send it, tap the arrow on the right of the text box.

To add an attachment (like a picture) tap the + on the left of the message box.


Pick what type of attachment you want to add then navigate through your phone to find it.


Tap to choose the item to add to your message, and send it by tapping the arrow.

Deleting a message thread

To delete a message thread, touch and hold on it until a tick appears beside it.

Tap the boxes to choose any other threads you want to delete, then tap the bin icon at the bottom of the screen.


3. Sending emails


To send an email, you need to have already set up an email account on your P9. If you haven't added your account yet, our Setup guide will help you.

Swipe across the Home screen and tap Email.


Tap + compose at the bottom of the screen.


Tap the To line and type a contact's name or an email address. Matching contacts will appear as you type. Tap on one to choose it.


Enter a Subject, then type your email in the main window.


Send the message by tapping the arrow in the top-right corner.

Adding an attachment

To add an attachment, tap the chain-link icon just above the keyboard on the right of the screen.


Pick what you want to attach, then find it on your phone. Tap the item to choose it, then tap the tick.


You might be asked to resize the pictures. This is a good idea, as smaller images will use less mobile data.


To send, tap the right-facing arrow.

4. Setting alarms


Alarms are managed in the Clock app on the P9. You can set up as many alarms as you need by following these steps.

From the Home screen, swipe across then tap Clock > Alarm.


To edit an existing alarm, tap the line. To set a new alarm, tap + Add at the bottom of the screen.


Set the alarm time by scrolling up or down the hours and minutes.


Tap Repeat to choose multiple days for the alarm to sound on.


Pick a Ring tone and choose a Label to give the alarm a unique name, like Work or School.

Tap the tick when you've finished picking your options.


Tap the switches to turn an alarm off or on.


To delete an alarm, touch and hold on the line, then tap the - in the red circle beside it.


Tap Settings on the Alarm screen to change extra settings, like the snooze duration.

5. Tips


Finding content on your P9

Swipe down from the top of the P9's Home screen to get to the search box. Type the name of a file, app or contact in your phone to find them quickly. You can search for words or phrases in emails and messages, and also search the internet.

Controlling your P9 with gestures

Turn on gesture control by going to Settings Smart assistance > Motion control and tap any you want to turn on.

  • Flip - Mutes the sound and stops vibrations from incoming calls, text messages and alarms by turning your phone over.
  • Pick up - This reduces the volume of calls, messages and alarms when you pick up the handset.
  • Raise to ear - When your phone is ringing, raise it to your ear to answer the call. If you have a contact on the screen, lifting the phone to your ear will call them.
  • Tilt - Used on the Home screen, this lets you to move between screens by tilting your handset to the side. When you have a keyboard onscreen, tilt the phone to slide the keyboard across to type one-handed.
