Kit Guide: HTC U Play - setting it up

This guide will take you through everything from the what's in the box, to protecting your new phone with a lock screen.

HTC U Play User Manual

If you need to download a copy of your user manual, you can get it here

1. Box contents

You'll get this stuff in the box:

  • HTC U Play
  • USB mains adaptor
  • USB cable
  • Rear bumper cover
  • Wired headphones (with spare earbuds)
  • Information pack (with SIM tool)

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

It's a good idea to put your SIM card in first, so get the 'SIM tool' that came with your information pack, then find the pinhole on the top edge of the phone. Push the thin end of the tool into the hole and the tray will pop out.

You'll notice there are two spaces in the tray, one for the SIM and one for the memory card. The SIM goes into the lowest slot. Line it up with the cut off corner, and make sure that the gold contacts are touching the tray, then you can slide it back into the phone.

If you've got a memory card to put in as well, line it up in the top space. Again, you'll need to make sure the gold contacts are touching the tray.

3. Completing the U Play Setup Wizard

You'll need to set the U Play up before you can start using it. We've explained all the steps to get through it as easily as possible.

If you're able to connect to Wi-Fi, we recommend you do it at this point so that the phone can download everything it needs to. Tap the name of your network in the list.

You'll be asked if you're sure, so tap Skip anyway.

The bottom middle button on your Home screen is the 'Apps' button, and tapping it opens a list of all the apps on your phone.

'Home' (middle button): gets you back to the Home screen from anywhere.

'Back' (arrow): goes back one screen.

'Recent apps' (square): gives a list of recently used apps.

4. Connecting to the Internet

You'll need the internet for lots of your apps and games, as well as keeping your phone up to date. These steps will help you stay connected.

Tap the switch at the top to turn Wi-Fi on and off. With it on, choose a network name to connect to it.

Type in the wireless password. If it's your own network and you're not sure what the password is, it'll be on a sticker on the router. Press Connect when it's in.

Open the apps list, then tap Settings.

Next to 'Mobile data', tap the switch to turn it on or off.

That's all there is to it. If your mobile data doesn't seem to be working, you might need to put some manual settings in. Don't worry, we've got a guide for it here.

5. Setting up new email accounts

If you've got more than one email account that you need to manage on your phone, these steps can help you with setting up new accounts. That way, you can keep everything in one place.

Go to Settings > Accounts & Sync. Tap the + in the top right corner to add a new account.

Choose what type of account it is. It'll usually be 'IMAP' unless it's a work/education account. Then it'll probably be 'Exchange'.

Type in your email address and password, then tap Finish.

The account will set up automatically, and you'll go back to the settings page. You'll see the new account listed.

If there's been a problem with the settings, or you're struggling to make it work, you might need some manual settings. Don't worry, we've got a guide to email server settings for you.

6. Setting up a lock screen

Without a lock screen, anyone could pick up your phone and see what's stored on it. Adding a lock screen will help keep your information safe. Follow these steps to get protected.

From the Home screen, press Apps > Settings > Security > Screen lock.

Choose what type of screen lock you want. We think 'PIN' or 'Password' are the most secure.

You can protect yourself more by choosing to have a PIN for start-up as well. Choose an option then press Continue.

Type in the 'PIN' or 'Password' you want, then do it again to confirm it. Choose your notification options, then press Done.

That's the HTC U Play set up now. If you need help with anything else, you can contact one of our Team Knowhow experts here.
