In this guide, we're going to explore the essentials of your phone. We'll cover everything from making calls and sending texts, to some extra tips that'll help you make the most of it.
Your phone can do a lot of impressive things, but making calls is still one of the core features you'll use day to day.
Open the Phone app from the Home screen.
When the app opens, you'll have these options:
When you have a number onscreen, tap the green phone icon to call it.
In this section of the guide, we'll go through how to send texts and attachments (like pictures).
Open the Messaging app from the Home screen.
Tap the new message icon in the bottom-right, or tap a person's name to reply to them.
If you're writing a new text, tap the To box, and start typing a person's number or name. You might get suggestions showing from your contacts as you're typing - tap one to choose them.
Tap the Write message box, and type your text.
Press the arrow next to the message box to send it on its way.
To send an attachment, first follow steps 1-4 above to get the message ready, then go through these steps.
Tap the paperclip on the side of the message box.
Choose the type of thing you want to attach - a camera picture, a voice recording etc.
Go through the phone to find the item you want to send, and tap it.
Press the arrow to get the attachment sent.
A 'message thread' is all the messages sent between you and a contact. To delete one:
Open the Messages app.
Press and hold the thread until a tickbox shows next to it.
Tap the bin icon at the top.
Before you can send emails, you'll have to have added an email account to your phone. If you haven't, read through our Google Pixel set up guide to see how.
Open the Gmail app from the Home screen.
Tap the new email button in the bottom-right.
Tap the To box, and start typing a person's email address or name. You might get suggestions from your contacts showing - tap one to choose them.
Type a subject for the email.
Type your message into the box at the bottom.
Tap the arrow in the top-right to send the email.
Go through steps 1-5 above to get your email ready, and then follow these steps to add an attachment.
Tap the paperclip in the top-right, and tap Attach file.
Go through your phone and find the item you want to send, and tap it.
With it attached, tap the arrow in the top-right corner to send it.
The Alarm app on your Pixel lets you set more than one alarm, so you can have one for work, home, weekend or school. We'll go through how to set one, and change the options for it here.
Open the Clock app from the Home screen.
Tap the alarm icon in the top-left corner.
Tap the + button at the bottom.
Use the clock to set the hour and minute you want the alarm to go off, then tap OK.
Tap Repeat, then choose the days you want the alarm to go off.
Tap Default ringtone to change the sound it'll make, and tick the box for Vibrate if you want the phone to vibrate when it goes off.
Tap Label to give the alarm a name, like 'work' or 'school'.
Once you've learnt the basics of your phone, these tips will help you to get a little bit more out of it.
Google Assistant is a service that runs on your phone and can keep you up to date with the latest news and information on your interests. You can also ask it questions and it will try and find the answer for you.
Press and hold the Home button for a few seconds to open Google Assistant. When it opens, you can ask a question like "how's the traffic", or "what films are out this week". You can also ask it to do tasks, like "send a message to Mum".
If you have any other bits of kit that are running low on battery, you can use your Google Pixel to provide power to it. You can plug a USB C cable directly from your Pixel to your other USB C device, or you can use the USB C adapter that came in the box to charge other accessories and kit.
When you plug in another device, swipe down from the top of your Pixel, and tap USB mode, then choose Charge this Device.
