Kit Guide: Caterpillar S30 - setting it up

Before you can start using your S30, there are a few things you'll need to do first. Just follow the steps in our guide and you'll be up and running in no time.

Caterpillar S30 User Manual

If you need to download the user manual for your phone, you can get it here

1. Box contents

Here's what you'll find in the box:

  • Caterpillar S30
  • Mains/MicroUSB power adaptor
  • USB cable
  • Documentation pack

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards

The first thing you'll need to do is put the SIM card into your phone. It takes a NanoSIM, which goes into a slot on the side. If you want to use a MicroSD card to increase the memory, this also goes into a slot on the side of the phone.

Caterpillar S30 SIM

Inserting the SIM card

On the right-hand edge of the phone, just below the power button, you'll see two covers. Using your thumbnail, lift the covers away from the phone.

You'll need to pull out the tray in the slot closest to the power button.

Put the SIM card into the tray with the metal contact facing up, and slide the tray back into the phone.

If you're not inserting a memory card, you can close the covers, making sure they're securely pushed back into the phone.

Inserting a MicroSD card

Follow step 1 above to remove the SD card cover.

The MicroSD card doesn't go into a tray, it just slots into the side of the phone. Push the card in, with the metal contacts facing down.

Replace the covers, making sure they're securely pushed into the phone.

3. Completing the S30 Setup Wizard

After you've inserted your SIM card and turned your phone on, you'll see the Setup Wizard. This is a series of steps that helps you get your phone set up and ready to use.

Choose your language, and tap Next.

Tap the Wi-Fi network you want to connect to. You can skip this if you want, but we wouldn't recommend it because your phone will need to download some updates. This can use a lot of mobile data if you're not on Wi-Fi.

Type your Wi-Fi password, if you're not sure what it is, it should be printed on your router.

If you already have a Google account, enter your Gmail address, and tap Next. If you don't have one, set one up by tapping Create a new account. You'll need a Google account to download apps and games from the Play Store.

Type your password, and tap Next.

You'll need to agree to Google's 'Terms of Service' and 'Privacy Policy'. You can read these if you want, by tapping the links, then tap Accept.

Set up a payment method if you want, this makes it easier to buy content from the Play Store. There are thousands of free apps though, so you can also skip this by tapping No, thanks, then Continue.

You'll be asked whether you want to set up a lock screen, but we cover this in a later chapter, so we recommend tapping Skip.

Choose which Google services you want to use, just untick the box if you don't want to use any of them, and tap Next.

Tap Got it to finish the Setup and go to your Home screen.

Touchscreen buttons

You'll see three icons at the bottom of the screen, these are the 'Navigation buttons' and they're used to get around your phone.

  • 'Home' (circle): pressing this returns you to the Home screen from any screen or app.
  • 'Back' (triangle): takes you back one screen.
  • 'Menu' (square): displays recently used apps.

4. Connecting to the Internet

There are two ways you can connect to the internet - using Wi-Fi, or mobile data. In this part of the guide we'll show you how to do both.

Connecting the S30 to a Wi-Fi network

From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Wi-Fi.

Make sure the Switch is turned on, and tap the name of your network.

Type the password (if you're not sure what it is, it's usually printed on your router). Tap Connect.

You'll see the word 'Connected' below the name of your network.

Turning mobile data on or off

From the Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Data usage.

Tap the Mobile data switch to turn it on or off.

If you haven't been able to connect your phone to mobile internet, we've written some guides to help here.

5. Setting up new email accounts

Before you can send emails, you'll need to add your account to your phone. You probably added your Gmail account when you went through the Setup, but this part of our guide will show you how to add other types of account.

From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Accounts > Add account.

Choose the type of account you want to add. Most personal accounts are 'IMAP', but if you have an older type of email account, it might still use 'POP3'. If you have an education or work email address, tap 'Exchange'.

Type your email address, and tap Next.

You can change some of the options if you want, like how often your phone checks for new messages, or whether you're notified when new email arrives. Either tick, or untick the boxes, and when you're happy with the settings, tap Next.

Give the account a name if you want, and enter your name (this will be shown on your outgoing messages).

Tap Next to finish setting up your email.

If your email account didn't set up properly, our guide to email server settings will help.

6. Setting up a lock screen

If you didn't add a lock screen as part of the Setup, we'll show you how to do it here. It's always a good idea, because it helps to protect any information that's stored on your phone.

  • 'Swipe' is the default setting and doesn't secure your phone.
  • 'Pattern' lets you draw a pattern on a grid of dots.
  • 'PIN' is a standard 4 digit PIN number.
  • 'Password' lets you choose a more complex password.
