Apple iPhone 6s - setting it up restoring from an iCloud or iTunes backup

This guide will take you through the setup of your Apple iPhone 6s, from inserting the SIM, to setting up a lock screen. This guide will help you to get your phone set up, and show you how to restore your data from an iCloud backup.

1. Box contents

Here's what you'll find in the box:

  • iPhone 6s
  • Information pack with SIM removal tool
  • Lightning cable
  • Mains plug adaptor
  • EarPods

2. Inserting your SIM

Your iPhone 6s uses a NanoSIM, which goes onto a tray in the side of the phone.

The next step asks you how you want to set up the rest of the phone. This guide is for people who have used an iPhone before, and want to transfer their data from their old one.

Restoring from an iTunes backup

You'll need to use a computer to restore from a backup you made with iTunes, and it'll need to have the latest version of iTunes on it. You can download iTunes from the Apple website here. Once it's up to date, open it up.

Tap Restore from iTunes Backup on your phone, then connect it to your computer. Using iTunes, choose the backup you want to restore and when it's done, you can start using your phone.

Your iPhone has buttons that help you get around the phone.

  • Press once: always takes you back to the Home screen.
  • Press and hold: this will open Siri.
  • Double press: opens the 'task switcher', which shows you apps you've had open recently, and lets you swap between them. If you do it while the phone's locked, it'lll open Apple Pay so you can pay for things using your phone.
  • Placing your finger: activates Touch ID, letting you unlock the phone, apps or settings using your fingerprint.

'Back' button: most apps will show it in the top left corner. It will take you back to the previous screen in that app.

4. Connecting to the Internet

To do things like downloading apps or games, getting email or browsing the web, you'll need to have an internet connection. You can connect using Wi-Fi or mobile data, and we'll show how to check both of these.

Connecting the iPhone 6s to a Wi-Fi network

Turning mobile data on or off

If you're having any problems connecting to mobile data, we have dedicated guides for each network that show you how to manually set it up here.
