This guide is going to take you through setting up your Alcatel OneTouch Pop 4 and getting it ready to use - from inserting the SIM card to keeping your phone secure with a lock screen.
The OneTouch Pop 4 uses a MicroSim card, and extra storage can be added by inserting a MicroSD card.
To insert the SIM and MicroSD cards, you'll need to take the back cover off the phone:
Hold the phone with the screen facing away from you.
In the bottom right corner of the casing is a thumbnail notch - use this to pry the back cover away from the phone.
Take the battery out if it’s already inside.
Slide the SIM card into left slot, beneath the camera. The gold contacts need to point down, and the cut-off corner should go in first.
Insert the MicroSD card into the right slot, again with the contacts facing down.
Put the battery back in, using the contact points to line it up. Once that’s done, put the cover back on. You can line this up using the camera lens hole, and then press down firmly on all the edges so that the cover snaps back into place.
Press and hold the power button for about 3 seconds to turn on the phone, and start going through the Setup Wizard.
The 'Setup Wizard' will help set up some basics on your OneTouch Pop 4 to get it ready for use.
You might get a pop-up on the screen asking you to choose your network. If you see this, tap your network, and it'll download the right settings for that network.
Choose your language, and then tap the Yellow arrow.
Tap on the Wi-Fi network that you want to connect the phone to. If Wi-Fi isn’t available or you don't want to connect right now, tap Skip in the bottom right.
If you’re connecting to Wi-Fi, you'll need to type in the password. This can normally be found on a sticker on your router. Type it in, and press Connect.
Once you’re connected, your phone will move on to the next screen automatically. If you’ve had an Android phone before, you can copy some data from it by tapping Copy Google accounts, apps and other data from your other device, and then holding the two phones near each other. The other phone will need to have 'NFC' connectivity to support this transfer. To skip this, select No, thanks, and tap Next.
You'll be asked for permission to send some phone activity data to Google. To allow this, tap Accept, or to stop this, tap Decline.
If you have a Google account, type in your email address and tap Next. If you don't have a Google account tap Or create a new account to make one. You can also press Skip to continue without a Google account.
If you’re signing in, type in your password, and tap Next.
Scroll through the Google Services, and untick any you don't want to use.
Once you've chosen the services you want, tap Next.
You might be asked to add some payment info to your Google account, which can be used to buy apps, music or games from the Google Play Store. To add payment info now, select a payment method, then tap Continue and fill in the details for it. To skip this, choose No, thanks, and then tap Continue.
You can add other accounts if you want, or tap Not now and then Next.
You can add a lock to your phone to stop other people from using it. To do this now, tick the box and then tap Next.
If you’re adding a screen lock, choose the type:
Once you've chosen a screen lock type, type or draw it, and then confirm it.
Choose whether to show or hide notifications on the lock screen, and then tap Next.
If there are any phone backups on your Google account, you’ll be asked if you want to restore them. This could bring over things like pictures and contacts from your other phone. If you want to do that, tap the backup you want to restore. If you don't want to restore a backup, choose Set up as new device.
Once you’ve made a choice, tap Next.
If you’re restoring, you'll need to choose which apps you want download from the backup by ticking them. Tap Done.
The Setup Wizard is finished. Your phone will now give you some info about its new 'launcher', which is where you find all your apps. Tap Next to continue to the Home screen.
You'll now be at the Home screen, and will get a pop-up asking for some permissions. These let the apps on your phone alert you about missed calls and unread messages. Tap Allow or Decline.
Along the bottom of the Home screen are the most used apps, including the Phone, Messaging, Camera and Chrome apps. The middle icon is the 'Apps' icon, which lets you see the rest of the apps on your phone.
At the bottom of the phone are the 'Navigation keys' that you can use to get around the phone.
‘Back’ (triangle): takes you back one screen.
‘Home’ (circle): pressing this returns you to the Home screen from any screen or app.
‘Recent apps’ (square): shows you any apps you've had open recently, so you can jump between them.
Your phone needs the internet for most of its features. You can connect the phone to a Wi-Fi network or use mobile data. The steps below will help you make sure both are working.
From the Home screen tap the Apps icon, then tap the Settings app.
Under the Wireless & networks section, tap Wi-Fi.
Check if Wi-Fi is turned on at the top. If it’s off, slide the switch to turn it on.
Your phone will scan for Wi-Fi networks. Tap on the one you want to connect to.
You'll need to type in the password for the Wi-Fi. This is normally found on a sticker on your router. Once it is typed in, press Connect.
Once this is done, you should see the word 'Connected' underneath the chosen Wi-Fi network. You should also see the Wi-Fi signal indicator at the top of the screen, next to the mobile signal indicator.
To check if your '3G' or '4G' mobile data is working, you need to turn Wi-Fi off:
Settings > Wi-Fi > slide switch off
With Wi-Fi off, check for 3G or 4G showing at the top of your screen next to the mobile signal. You might have '2G' or 'E' if you don't have great signal. If you see one of these symbols, try going on the internet to test it. If that works, then you don't need to do anything else.
If your mobile data doesn't work, follow the steps below.
Open up the Settings app.
In the Wireless & networks section, tap More.
Tap Mobile Networks, and check that Mobile data is turned on using the switch at the top.
If you still don’t have a mobile data connection, you’ll need to look at phone's 'APN' settings. These are all the settings the phone needs to get the internet from your mobile network. You can find them, and how to set them up, on our APN settings page.
Your phone can work with emails from personal, work and educational accounts. You’ll need to know which type of account you have, and the phone will automatically try and find the right settings for you.
Start by going into the settings:
Apps > Settings > Accounts > Add account
Choose the type of account you want to add. Most accounts will use the Email option, but if you have a work or school email address, you'll need to use the Corporate option.
You'll need to give the app permission to access your photos so that you can send and receive attachments. Press Allow to continue.
Type in your email address, then Next.
Type in the password for your email account, then Next.
Your phone will try and automatically download the right settings for your account.
You might be able to adjust some account options such as 'Sync Frequency', which controls how often the phone checks for new emails, and for the phone to let you know when new email arrives. Choose the options you want, then Next.
You can give the account a name, which is useful if you’re adding more than one account. You can also change how your name appears on messages you send from the phone.
Your email account will now have been added to the phone. You can see your emails by opening the Email app on the Home screen.
If your account doesn’t automatically set up in step 7, you’ll need to provide the settings for your account. Tap the Manual setup button, and then fill in the details for your email. If you’re not sure what these are, check the email settings guide for your account to find them.
If you’re using a school or work email, you might need to get your IT team to set it up for you.
To keep all your information and pictures safe on your phone, you can set up the lock screen so that only you can get into the phone. If you didn't set up a lock screen during the initial setup, we'll show you how to do this now.
Open the Settings app.
Scroll down, and tap on Lock screen.
Tap Screen lock.
Choose the type of lock screen you want:
Once you've chosen a screen lock, type or draw it onscreen, and then confirm it.
Choose whether to show or hide notifications on the lock screen, then Next.
You can also change how quickly the phone will automatically lock, and whether to show a message on the lock screen.
