Kit Guide: Alcatel OneTouch Pixi3 - using it


This guide takes you through setting up a new Alcatel OneTouch Pixi3. We cover everything you need to get it ready for its first use, from inserting the SIM to adding your email accounts.

2. Inserting your SIM & memory cards


Your Pixi3 takes a standard sized SIM, and you'll need to take the battery out to install it. We'll also show you how to increase the storage by adding a MicroSD memory card.

On the right hand edge of the phone, you'll see a small notch. Use your thumbnail to prise the back cover away from the phone.


Slide the SIM card into the housing just below the camera lens, with the mteal contacts facing down.


The memory card goes into the slot next to the SIM card, again wih the metal contacts facing down.

When you've inserted the SIM card (and memory card, if you have one), you can replace the battery and carefully put the cover back on to the phone.

3. Completing the Pixi3 Setup Wizard


Before you start using your phone, you'll need to get through the Setup Wizard. This is a series of steps that help you get the phone set up and ready to use - we'll take you through everything here.

At any time during the setup you might see a 'SIM provider' pop-up on screen asking you to choose your mobile network from a list. Just choose the correct network name and tap OK.

Choose your language from the list, and tap Get started.


You can choose the size of font that's displayed on the screen, scroll up and down to choose the one you want and tap the right arrow.


Your Alcatel Pixi3 will try to detect the time from your mobile network, but not all providers support this. If the time and date appear incorrect, you can change them quite easily. Start by tapping the Automatic setting at the top.

Turn off automatic time updating by selecting Off.


Tap Set date, and adjust the date by scrolling through the onscreen settings, then tap Done.


Tap Set time and then change the time in the same way as the date, and tap Done when you are finished.


Once the time and date are correct, tap the right arrow to proceed.

Your new Pixi3 has a few different keyboards installed. If you're unsure which one to use, we recommend starting with the Android keyboard (you can change it later if you want). Tap to choose it, and tap the right arrow.


To connect to Wi-Fi, tap the name of the wireless network you want to connect to.


Type the password for your Wi-Fi network - if you're not sure what it is, it's usually printed on your router.


If it's successful, you'll see the word 'Connected' below your network name. Tap the right arrow to continue.

Tick the Data enabled box so you can stay connected when you're not near a Wi-Fi network, then tap the right arrow.


You will be invited to set up a Google account (an email address ending in or As the Pixi3 is an Android handset, having a Google account unlocks some extra features, like downloading apps from the Play Store, or backing up your photos to your Google account. To add a Google account tap Set up now, or tap the right arrow to skip this.


If you haven't already got a Google account, tap New and fill in the onscreen form to set up a Google account for free. If you have one already, tap Existing to sign in.


To sign in, enter your Gmail address and password in the boxes provided, then tap the right-facing arrow. If you're setting up a new account, fill in the form.

You'll need to accept the 'Terms of Service' and other legal agreements to use the Pixi3. Read them if you want by tapping on the links, and when you're happy to agree, tap OK.


The next page is about background services your Google account can perform. Backup & Restore lets your Google account to back up your handset's apps and settings. The Communication option asks whether you wish to be sent information from the Play Store. Untick either of the options on this screen if you want to opt out of them, and press the right arrow to continue.


Location services help Google to give you search results relevant to your local area, and also improves apps like mapping, or weather. Tap the switch at the top to turn this on, then choose which option you'd like to use. High accuracy uses the most battery power, but gives the best results. When you're happy with your choice, tap the right arrow.


If you've turned location services on, you'll need to agree to send anonymous data to Google. Tap Agree to turn on Location services, or Disagree to turn them off.

You'll see some options about backup & reset on your Pixi3. Tick the Back up my data box to let your phone to back up to your Google account. If you've previously used an Android phone you can restore any backed up information to your new phone by ticking the second box. Tap the right arrow.


That's the setup wizard done. Tap Enjoy now to go to the Home screen and start using your phone.


You'll see some tips about moving apps around your Home screen, tap OK to close this.

4. Connecting to the Internet


If you didn't connect to a Wi-Fi network when you went through the Setup, we'll show you how to do it here. We'll also show you how to turn your mobile data on and off.

Connecting the Pixi3 to a Wi-Fi network

Here's how to connect your phone to a Wi-Fi network.

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and make sure the switch at the top of the screen is on (blue).


Tap the name of the network you want to connect to.


Enter your Wi-Fi password (if you're not sure what it is, it should be printed on your router). Tap Connect.


If it's successful, you'll see the word 'Connected' below the name of your network.

Turning mobile data on or off

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Data Usage and tap the Mobile data switch to turn it on or off.

If you're having trouble getting connected to mobile data, you might need to add the settings manually. We've written a guide to APN settings for all of the major networks to help you with this.

5. Setting up new email accounts


You probably added a Gmail (Google) account when you went through the initial Setup, but your phone can manage lots of different types of email. Here's how to set them up.

From your Home screen, go to Settings > Add account.


If you have an Exchange email account (often used by employers, or education providers) choose Corporate. If your email is an IMAP account tap Personal (IMAP) and if it's a POP account choose Personal (POP3).


Type in your email address and tap Next.


Enter the password for your email account and tap Next.

You can change some of the account options, like how often your phone checks for new mail, and whether you want to automatically download attachments. When you're happy with the settings, tap Next.


You can name the account if you want, and you'll also need to enter your name (this will be shown on any emails you send).


Tap Done to finish the setup.
