Kit Guide: Why won't my fridge get cold?

Keeping food refrigerated helps it stay fresh for longer, but if it isn't cool enough bacteria will cause it to spoil quickly.

This short guide will help you keep your fridge running properly.

What to do if your fridge isn't cold enough

A fridge thermometer will help you keep an eye on the temperature, and it'll show whether any of these steps work for you. Fridges should normally be between 3-5C.

  • Check the thermostat: It might have been knocked changing the setting. If the weather is very hot or very cold, you might have to adjust the thermostat to allow for this too.
  • Check the door seal: If the door isn't sealing properly, the temperature won't get to the right level. Try trapping a piece of paper in the door seal when you close it - if it comes out with little or no effort, the seal may need replacing.
  • Check for frost: If there's a build-up of frost, the air won't circulate properly inside the fridge and it won't chill as it should.
  • Check behind the fridge: If it's too close to the wall, air can't circulate round the cols which help to keep the fridge cool. If they're covered in a build-up of dust, use a vacuum cleaner to get rid of it. Be careful not to damage them, as this could cause a leak.
  • Check the motor and fan: Unplug the fridge before you do this, and vacuum any build-up of dust and dirt to help keep things running smoothly.
