How to load your dishwasher

squiggleboldXL

The way you load your dishwasher can have an effect on how clean your plates and cutlery are when the cycle finishes.

This quick guide shows you where everything should go to help you get the best clean possible.

Top rack

Put these things on the very top rack:

  • Cups & glasses: put them in at an angle so that the water jets get inside them. Try not to stack them, as water from the spray bar won’t be able to get inside.
  • Bowls: like glasses, put them on the tray upside down so water and detergent can get inside them. If there’s any big pieces of food left inside, just scrape it into the bin beforehand.
  • Plastic tubs: sandwich boxes, takeaway tubs, and any other plastics should be placed on the top shelf - before you put plastic in, just make sure it’s dishwasher safe by looking for the icon on the bottom.
  • Long cutlery items like ladles and bread knives should be laid flat across the rack (if you put them in the cutlery basket they’ll get in the way of the spray bar).

Bottom rack

These things should be placed on the bottom rack:

  • Plates: put them in the rack with the top facing the centre to allow the water to directly spray the eating surface. Before they go it, scrape any big bits of food off.
  • Pots & pans: place large items around the outside of the tray to prevent them from getting in the way of the water.
  • Trays: slot trays in around the very edge of the dishwasher. As the biggest thing you’ll be washing, you need to place them so that they’re not preventing water and soap from hitting everything else.

Cutlery basket

Although it's pretty self-explanatory, there are a couple of things to bear in mind when loading the cutlery basket:

  • Put knives facing down and forks facing up to increase the amount of space between the ends. This makes sure that the most water possible can get to the dirtiest parts.
  • Place anything sharp with the handle pointing up, or lay it across the top rack for safety.

When the cycle’s finished, empty the bottom tray first, as the top one will drip when you start moving it.

Following these simple steps will help you get the cleanest dishes and cutlery possible every time.
