Should I rinse plates before putting them in the dishwasher?

While it seems like a good idea to always give your dishwasher a hand by rinsing plates before you put them in, it isn’t always the best thing to do…

What should I scrape off?

Dishwasher detergent works best when there’s something for it to work against, so there’s no need to completely rinse sauce, gravy, and other normal residue.

The only things that should be removed are pieces of food or big clumps of thick sauces. These are the bits that can get stuck in the filter or spraying mechanism and stop the dishwasher from working properly.

Should I rinse glasses?

Glasses should be placed in the dishwasher as they are. The detergent will sort anything left inside – in fact, rinsing them stops the detergent from working properly, so just put them straight in.

What about cutlery?

Unless they’re covered in something thick like Marmite or treacle, just drop knives, forks, and spoons straight into the cutlery tray. If they are, just give them a quick wipe.

Following these tips should help you get the cleanest dishes, pans, and cutlery possible.

However, if your dishwasher isn’t cleaning things properly, it might be time to give it a clean. You can find out the easiest way here.
