Kit Guide: How to stop glasses smearing in the dishwasher

Dishwashers are there to make life easier, but sometimes glasses come out looking cloudy, or covered in smears.

These steps will help restore the shine to your glassware, and stop you from having to wash it again by hand.

How to make your glasses clean again

  • Don't rinse glasses before loading: Detergents work best when they have dirt to 'grab on to'. If the glasses are too clean, the detergent will foam up leaving smears and residue.
  • Load the dishwasher carefully: Glasses should be placed open side down, and at a slight angle. This'll help the sprayers to aim water where it's most effective.
  • Use liquid detergent: Some compacted-powder detergents have abrasive particles in them, which can mark delicate glassware and make it look cloudy. Most liquid detergents are abrasive-free, and give better results.
  • Use rinse-aid: Adding rinse-aid to your dishwasher will help water drain from the glasses before it dries, stopping marks before they can form.
  • Don't forget the salt: Make sure there's enough dishwasher salt in the machine. Salt reacts with the detergent to make it work, giving better cleaning results all round.
