Kit Guide: Fixing sound problems on Windows computers

1. Check the volume and speaker connection

The sound on your computer might have been muted. Press the Volume Up button on your keyboard for a few seconds to turn the sound up, then try playing some sound again.

If you're using speakers that plug into the computer, check the connector's fully in place by taking it out and putting it back in.

If the speakers connect with a normal headphone connector, check it's in the speaker socket and not the microphone socket. If the speakers need power, check they're correctly plugged into the mains, and turned on. If this all looks good, then try the fixes below to get it working.

2. Run the Audio Troubleshooter

A 'sound card' is a part of your computer that makes the sound and sends it to your speakers. If the software for them is not up to date, this might be the problem. Follow these steps to update the sound card software.

1.

Click the Start button, then type 'Device Manager'. Click on Device Manager from the list of results.

2.

When Device Manager opens, click the next to Sound, Video and Game Controllers.

3.

Right-click on the sound card, and click Update Driver Software.

4.

Windows will now search for and install any new drivers for your sound card.

If you get a message saying Windows is updating the drivers, let this finish and then once it has, test playing some sound again.

If no updates are found, or the speakers are still not working, try reinstalling the driver software. Follow steps 1-2 above, then follow the steps below:

5.

Right click on the sound card, and click Uninstall.

6.

Wait for that to finish, and then restart your computer.

7.

Once the computer turns back on, test to see if the speakers are working.

If you're still not getting any sound, try Fix 4.

4. Set up your default audio device
