Kit Guide: Restoring a previous version of Windows

This guide will show you how go back to a previous version of Windows. This can only be done if you've upgraded from Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or an earlier version of Windows 10 in the past 10 days.

Restoring a previous version of Windows

Before starting the restore, plug your computer in if it's a laptop - the restore can take a few hours and would use up all the battery power. You'll need to know the password for the previous version of Windows to log back into it.

Click in the search box in the bottom-left of the screen, and type 'settings'. Click on Settings in the list of search results.

Click Update & Security.

Click Recovery.

Click Get started in the 'Go back to...' section.

Choose the reason you want to go back by ticking one of the boxes, and press Next.

Read the 'What you need to know' box for any other information you need to know, then click Next.

You'll get a pop-up warning which says that you might need your password for your old version of Windows. Click Next to carry on with the restore.

Click Go back to previous Windows.

Your computer will now start to restore your old version of Windows. This can take a few hours, and once it's done, you should be be able to log back into the previous version.
